There's a crack in the piston on my John Deere R. Is that a problem? Thanks.

Yes. If you can find a piston, replace it . It will fail. Grooving it and welding in the crack might work, but do not expect the welder to guarantee the result!! Jim
 
I would drill a hole at the end of the crack, Vee it out & heat it good & hot, puddle a broken piston ring with the gas torch & put it in wood ashes to cool.
