Help! Water pump leakage!

Well...I tried the ATF treatment on my David Brown 30c as recommended by old in the article on getting dead tractors running. It did lubricate the sleeves, but as the engine had been partially seized when I bought it, I made the decision to ditch the engine(and use it as parts) and put on a spare engine that I had picked up from awhile back. It was wonderful to be able to drive it for the first time in over 7 months! But the "new" engine's water pump has a leak! It pumps just fine, but there is 1 hole in the top and one underneath(in line with the belt pulley) plus the greasing stations. It is leaking out the bottom hole. Is that something that I can just plug up or would it just shoot out the top hole? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Joshua

Water is coming out the drain hole because the pump seal has failed. And the seal has failed because the pump bushing is bad. Replace the pump.

Thanks for that! I figured that I might have to replace it. Do you think that the bolt pattern on any other David Brown water pump might be compatible with mine like one off a 850 or 990?

The bolt pattern will probably be the same if it's the same engine family.

But pay close attention to the length of the shaft. It needs to match to get the proper pulley alignment.

Didn't you say this was a "spare" you had picked up. Do you still have it? Is it the same motor? If so pull that pump from it and either use it or rebuild it.

Have you tried giving it several shots of grease and retesting. I know that was standard procedure on our H and M Farmall tractors. Worth a try.

I'm not familiar at all with David Brown tractors. But in addition to bolt pattern, shaft and hub dimensions make sure the impeller will clear the cooling jacket cavity.

A new or remanufactured pump shouldn't be that hard to find. I wouldn't bother with a used one.

Good idea and I'd also give it a little time as if the motor sat dry the seal may have dried out and needs the water to swell back up.Also might loosen the fan belt to see if you have
any play in the shaft and if it turn smoothly or rough.

The pump off the 1st engine had a worse leakage than this one. I had temporary put one on from a 900. It doesn't leak a lot but that it leaks at all isn't good.
