AC 175 diesel tractor

My AC 175 was a good tractor. Has been sitting outside idle at a neighbor's place since I sold my beef cattle. I have started it periodically but most recently, all I get is "click. click. click" when I turn the key. Selenoid? Hoping it has not seized. The battery is nearly new. Also tried jumper cables from pick up truck but no luck. Advice welcome.

May be simple as a worn battery solenoid bolt. On Delco solenoids over time the contact washer wears away the bolt head. Try this, remove the ground cable, then remove all wires from the top solenoid battery post bolt. Loosen the inner nut enough to push the bolt IN, give it 1/2 turn, and pull it back out. Tighten the nut, replace all wires and cable, and connect the ground. If not previously done, this will place the unworn bolt head into play. Lots of Delco solenoids can be fixed this way, worth a try.

When you try to start it, do the dash lights or head lights or any other accessories go off?

If so, there is probably a bad connection at one of the battery cables or ground connection. It may be hidden under the insulation where the end attaches to the cable.

If there is a major "clunk" at the starter solenoid, and the lights stay on bright, like Dieseltech said, could be the solenoid contacts.

If there is a major clunk, and the battery cables jump and get hot, it may be stuck.

If the click is somewhere other than the solenoid, could be an electrical problem, neutral switch, mouse chewed wire, ignition switch...

Here is the answer that nobody else gave.
The AGE of the battery is not as important as the CONDITION of eth battery - especially the STATE OF CHARGE. Any battery - new or old - can get run down from using and not recharging.
Typically, when you just get clicking, it is because the battery is low on charge.

So, my recommendation is to first check the state of charge of the battery. If it is fully charged, then start doing diagnosis.

Hate to be the nay sayer but check if the engine is free. Make sure the ingnition is off or the fuel.shut off is pulled and the trans is in neutral. Grab the fan firmly and try to turn the engine. If the belt slips apply more tension to the loose segment with your free hand. If you see any movement of the crank pulley in the normal direction of rotation you are good to proceed with the other folks recommendations. You never know what can happen when a tractor sits out unprotected in heavy rains. If it does not turn the direction of normal rotation but turns backwards it may be hydro-locking against water in a cylinder. This requires pulling all the spark plugs or injectiors then turning the engine to clear the water from the cylinders. Good luck!

Also loosening the engine oil drain plug to see if any water has settled into the bottom of the oil pan would also be a good indicator of water in the cylinders.
