To replace a wheel stud, on a rear end axle, so the stud can be hammered back into the axle. I guess the proper way is to remove the axle. Can it be pulled into the axle by the lug nut? Stan

The nut and washers works well. Try to align any knurling. Use the nut u side down (if flat on that side) Jim

don't need to remove axle just pound out old ones and pull new ones in I use an impact but you have to know when to stop

If you can find some hardened washers the fit the stud, and lube 'em and the stud with a little 90 gear oil it'll go easier with less wear and tear on the nut and the threads.

Pull it through, lug nut, cone side OUT, and a couple of flat washers lubed will act as bearings. When you think it is pulled through enough, rap the flange at the stud with a hammer, that will set it.

An impact gun will make it a lot faster.

I went to get a new front tire put on at the local shop. F350 flat deck.
Every one of the studs started to spin... something wierd there. Tire shop didn't have new studs and didn't want my truck stranded there so they carefully snugged them up.

I drove home and torched off the studs and nuts. Luckily my local fix it guy was just heading into town to pick up some parts. He said he would grab new studs on the way.... had to go to three places to get the right ones.

Anyway I lubed them up with never seize - threads and knurled shoulder edges. I used the impact and tapped the head with a hammer as they tightened up. All seated well.
Not a hard job, but glad I had the impact. It's a snug fit.

Glad I got that tire changed before it blew. It would have been a tow job for sure on the side of the highway.

Remember to retorque after driving a bit.

Dagum I would have thought every one would own a Kastar wheel stud installer kit...

Before I got the kit I would tear down auto AC compressors for the flat NEEDLE THRUST ROLLER BEARING and the harden washers. I used them to install wheel studs. I have handed them to a few guys that have worked for me and said here you may need this one day all I got was "fer whut"...

If you have one and have the room for it on what you are working on a ball joint press works well for removing them, add a deep socket and it works for installing the studs as well.
