ford 661 new gas tank peeling inside.

Bought a new gas tank 6 months ago and had the tractor running great. Went to start it up and no gas getting to the carb. Checked in the tank and all the sealer that was in the tank was bubbling up and peeling off. What a mess. The dealer (Ebay) will replace the tank but I want to buy one that is not sealed on the inside. I found one but it did not have the sending unit hole on top. I still have my old tank but it has particles inside that I can not get out. What is the secret to cleaning these tanks or getting a good tank?

I had same problem with my Jubilee.
A few years back, I bought a new tank off YT for around $200.

I replace a lot of fuel tanks on cars and trucks I see some new tanks that I believe have a coat of paint on the inside the same paint that's on the outside..

No problems with them YET....

If its painted are coated correctly it should be better than a non-painted-coated tank BUT its up to the manufacture and something we can not control unless we prep and coat it yourself...

Put a standpipe in the tank, preferably one with a screen around it. My wifes motorcycle has a screen 3 inches long sticking up into the tank, that is a good system.

There are more than a few methods of cleaning a gas tank. 1. Diluted muratic acid (cleans well but you'll have near instant flash rust) 2. Commercial tank cleaner from POR 15(I used this in mine and did well with a couple of pounds of BBs and shaking the tank. or you can used nuts and bolts) 3. Take your tank to a radiator shop and see if they'll clean it out for you. I used POR 15 tank sealer on my 850 and it has been 6 years with no problems. Recently did a motorcycle tank with a Caswell Tank sealer kit. Seems to work well. It is a clear epoxy which means it seals the metal from any O2 and stops/prevents rust. One thing about a tank sealer, if the tank's metal is thin, it will add support. Check the web and you'll find many suggestions on how to clean your tank. You'll also find the various sealers. One thing that is very important to remember, cleaning and preparation is the key to a good seal.
POR 15

DITTO on the POR15. I use it in all of my tractors that have rusty tanks. A bunch of flat washers and the POR15 Marine Clean cleaner will clean out a tank. I always buy an extra bottle of the Marine Clean and do the wash twice. I have been using POR15 for the last 15 years, just make sure and follow the directions!
