How about motor oil in an old transmission?

1949 AC Model G needs transmission/hydraulic oil changed.

Manual specifies straight 20W for this system.

I know the need to avoid conventional hydraulic and transmission oils because of their Brass-Coroding Factors.

Any opinions on using readily available 20W-50 motor oil as substitute?

I would use "UTF", (universal tractor transmission and hydraulic fluid).

AFAIK, the "yellow metal" corrosion issues would relate to heavy duty 90-weight and such "gear oils", such as GL-5, some of which are not "yellow metal safe".

I'm with Nicholson on this one.

I actually called Warren Mfg. about gear oils and yellow metals some years ago. Warren does a lot of private label as well as
their own brands.

I was told that the active additives in the gear oils are buffered to where the yellow metal attack is nil.

Farm related parts store could more than likely find a source for what is said in Manuel. They might not carry it
on their shelf, but probly get it from supplier if not. I am not much on using substitutes. But that is just me.
Your not going to be changing transmission fluid very often to boot. Maybe worth taking time to get it right.

Honda autos use engine oil in the transmissions It has Extreme pressure additives, and is suitable for the purpose. Do it.

Last week I sent a letter to Cenex asking this question. I was told not to use any GL-5 gear oil in tractors that have any red or yellow metal unless it specifically says it's red and yellow metal safe. This guy was supposed to be an oil specialist.

we use # 40 engine oil in our pump drive gear boxes at work. they take a lot more stress than your application, so I sure don't see a problem.
