Ford automatic crank cycle

DLMKA mentioned in his post about starting his 2013 F150 that it had a automatic crank cycle. Can anyone explain what that is?

Commonly called ?tip? start. You click the key to start, then let go. When the engine fires, the starter will stop. Came about when the OEMs started installing remote start.

I believe he is talking about the way you turn the key to the right and release it. It will start itself while you hook your seatbelt.

On all of the more modern trucks I have driven in the last few years all you do is bump the key and they will either crank until they start or crank until they cycle out. The first truck I drove that had that was a 2010 F150 I think, scared the crap out of me the first time it kept on cranking when I let off the key. I almost took it in for a service when another guy I worked with explained how it worked.

I have not had one with a key in the last several trucks. If you are in the truck ,foot on brake and hit the start button, this time of year while I am putting my clothes on these cold mornings, I hit the lock once and start twice, green light comes on if it starts or repeat if not but usually starts on one push. Seats and steering wheel are warm when I get there. Our coffee bunch sits around till 7 or so and everybody hits the button. Ford Key bob has a green light to let you know it starts, the chevy boys have to go to the window and look.. Pretty nice on these cold mornings.

The computer is controlling the length of time the starter will run, if not start, then you have to try again.

Thanks everyone for the explaination. I Goggled it but just got links regarding starter problems.

I have a 2012 Silverado and often wondered how the remote start would deal with a non-starting vehicle.

Thanks again. Paul

The computer looks for the RPM to come to idle, and will also monitor oil pressure and other safeties.
