duramax head gasket leak.

the right gasket is leaking at the rear to the outside, no bubbles inside rad. I want to try a sealer in it before tearing it down, nothing to loose now. wanna see what works if anything. has 400,000 k and runs as good as I bought it. disappointed in it now. want to know what is the best sealer to try, was thinking that aluminium powder stuff.

That sealer stuff can make a mess if you are planning to tear it down later after the bandaid fails. I'm not saying I havent done it though.

This is supposed to be the latest and greatest stop leak.

Shop next door told me about it, they swear by it. Owner "said" even the factory recommends putting it in as a preventive after a reassembly.

Looking at the specs, it is approved by GM, Ford, and Chrysler.

What you have to lose is to plug up a heater core and radiator in my opinion. I have replaced enough of them from having had stop leak used. In most cases, it didn't stop the leak anyways. Head gaskets leak because either the head or the block is no longer flat as it should be or the gasket itself has deteriorated and failed. Nothing in a can is going to resurface the head, the block, or put back gasket material. In many cases causing problems elsewhere.

There is only one right way to fix it, and it has nothing to do with goop in a can.

i've used Bar's brand a couple times. Their head gasket sealer worked great and almost immediately. I had no issues with anything plugging either. I think the newer stuff is better than what they had years ago that could plug things.

i don't/won't consider it a permanent repair. if you use your truck for heavy duty stuff you'll want to fix it. I have a buddy with a duramax with around 430,000ish miles that had had the top end gone thru. He hasn't repaired his yet but doesn't really tow with it. His is an intermittent leak and i don't think he's been able to pin point it either other than external and near the rear of the engine.

You need to fix it before the block deck etches. Duramax has a problem with deck etching, etching requires a complete teardown to surface the block.

thanks for the reply's. I tried bars leak years ago and was not impressed with it. I thought there might be better stuff out there. I know the outcome is a tear down. not a fan of aluminium heads either.
