How far off the row for fertilizer placement?

Was setting up the fertilizer
on my planter today and was
wondering how far away from
the row to set the fertilizer
openers? I thought it should
be 3? off the row, but can't
remember for certain. What do
you folks do?

2x2 is good for 10-34-0 but if its hotter like 18-19-0 go 3 inches over. We put a little pop up right with the seed.

2x2 is common, those of us in the wet heavy ground can get by with a lot. Typically 100-150# that way no problem, I hear of some going 300# but man that?s a lot of refills.

If you are a sandy or drier part of the state go 3 or 4 out if you are putting heavier amounts on.

not 2'' deeper than the seed, just 2'' deep.....2'' over and 2'' deep. I run 5 gal 10-34-0 and 15 gal 28% for my starter

I was taught that it is placed deeper than the seed because of the typical 45 degree downward angle the first roots will grow.

Yes, 2 inches deeper than the seed! But that is virtually impossible to do with double disk openers. Single disk openers can usually put it down that deep.

Bradley, I have a 7200 maxi merge 12 row planter, single disc opener on fert, I plant 1 1/2 deep for corn, there is no way on my ground I can NO-TILL and get the fert 3 1/2 deep, on sod or corn after corn, some been ground maby?.are you planting on plowed ground?

Two inches from the row and two inches deeper than seed placement is correct. Placing fertilizer on both sides of the row
has proven beneficial,so 2x2x2 .

I was referencing what various ag colleges have determined to be the ideal. As I said, it is nigh impossible to do with double disk openers (even in plowed ground) and even if you could, it would leave a huge furrow. In minimum till, the single disk openers on my White can usually get down 3", without leaving much of a trench. Deeper than that, and they tend to ride the planter frame out of the ground, causing wheel slippage. I fully agree that it is very difficult to place the fertilizer 2" below the seed, despite that being the recommended placement by most agricultural universities.
