Hello everyone
I m new to owning a tractor and need a little help. First question I have a Farmall 140 and need to know what type of engine oil to use. Second question what type of hydraulic fluid do I use. Third one I think I know the answer but Dad said the only stupid question is the one you don t ask but just want to confirm the hydr fluid check and fill is location one the side of the engine just in front of the battery. Thanks

Hi and welcome.

I think it's 30W for the engine and either Hytran or 30W non detergent for the hydraulics. Just ain't sure when IH switched over.

I'd check over on the IH side here https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewforum.php?f=14 still part of this site.

(quoted from post at 15:25:58 05/16/19) I use 15-40 Mobil Delvac in our Farmall C engine, works well. Hy-Tran in the hydraulics.

Even though by the book the M I had was supposed to be 30W and 30W non detergent I did the same thing.

I prefer 5W full synthetic in my Farmall 460, but then we always get into the -40's during winter. 5W helps the engine crank easier when very cold, but you don't want to use conventional 5W in warmer temps. If you rarely get below -20 in winter, I'd recommend regular oil, as suggested in the other posts.

I'd highly recommend getting an owners manual for your tractor. Better yet, also get a Parts Manual, as well as a Service Manual. They can be found here on this site (https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/tractor-manuals/ihc_farmall_tractor_manuals_pg2.html), as well as the page that follows (https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/tractor-manuals/ihc_farmall_tractor_manuals_pg3.html)

There are also manuals of all sorts available on eBay.

I would just use any auto parts store or even Walmart oil in a 10-40 weight, If not to worn even any 10-30 would do for engine. Just what ever brand you feel comfortable with and feel like paying the price. I myself feel the cheaper oil is just as good as the higher priced, just without the advertising costs of the higher priced oil. I don't knowthe hydrolicks on that tractor but the Farmall H just used engine oil in them.
