9n ford-three brush generator- over charge

Without the tractor running, my cheap multi-meter reads 6.39 volts at the battery. When running the voltage at the battery is 8.2 to 8.4. I have turned the adjustment screw as far as it can be turned to reduce the voltage, but it only reduced the voltage .3. I think it was Tim Daley who said that this is not a 9n generator but a later model for a 2n. It is a single wire generator. The cut out that I put on the 9n is from a 2n parts tractor. This generator had sat so long that the armature was stuck in the end cap bushing. I took it apart to free it up and lubricate it, and I do not think that I changed anything else in side it. Am I in danger of blowing up a battery if I continue running it at 8.2 volts charging rate? Does the generator need a break in cycle, after being awaken from it long long sleep?
Thank you

no. It should go correctly from the start. Does the generator 3rd brush adjust in the end frame. If so the farther it is away from the Arm brush, the less output. Jim

If it's a 3rd brush generator, what screw are you talking about where the voltage is regulated? Changing the location of the 3rd brush changes the charging rate by changing the amperage output of the generator. Never heard of it changing voltage, but maybe it does? That 3rd brush is mounted on the end plate into position relative to the two fixed brushes, some 3rd brush designs have the 3rd brush movable and anchored to the end plate by some sort of a screw hold down which has to be loosened before moving it. Other ones are on a movable ring that is not anchored with a screw but the 3rd brush can still be moved to change the charging rate. It just stays in place by the tension put on the ring it is mounted to when everything is assembled. I'm probably not answering your question. Not sure if 8.2 volts is too much or not.

(quoted from post at 21:41:47 05/31/19) 7.2 to 7.4 volts is OK. volts drive the amps through the circuit. Jim
ith Janicholson on be sure rush moves when you turn adj screw. Screw has gear meshed with gear on brush ring. Given the corrosion you mentioned, that gear mechanism may have suffered too.
