Found a case 7130 couple hours away from me for sale. The guy said he doesn?t really want to sell it but if he gets the right price he will let it go. I?m not really familiar with case tractors but I do know the cummins engine fairly well. The tractor has around 7000 ?original hours? according to the owner. He said he?s the second owner and that the tractor came out of the rice fields about 10 years ago and that was around 5k hours. He told me he?s thinking the hour meter is accurate. He said all he?s used it for was pulling a 8 yard scraper and is down sizing due to age is the reason for selling. I haven?t seen the tractor in person yet only pictures. Outside looks rough paint faded extra. He?s asking 30k for the tractor and scraper so what are some things I should look out for before buying And is that a fair price. I did talk to him over the phone and he said everything works as it should a/c hydraulics transmission etc. down side is Nearest case dealer is about an hour away from me. I don?t plan on working the tractor many hours a year maybe 100 hours mostly be used for pulling a 20? disc and 5 bottom plow. My main concern is the transmission. I don?t want the have to put 20k into it right after I buy it.

Got bout 8200 hours on my 7130 and no problems with the engine or transmission yet. I've owned it since it had 2500 hours. They hve a pretty good reputation here. Better than the 90 series Case which was really a completely different tractor.

One thing you seem to miss.. Its a case [b:ac779360f7]IH[/b:ac779360f7] 7130, the transmission was designed by IH based on the STS used in the 5X88 series tractors.
Don't confuse this transmission with anything Case built pre merger.

But is it a good transmission? Like I said
I don't know much about these tractors. Iv
been around the deere powershift and they
are dam near bulletproof to about 10k
hours. My cousins run a case ih similar to
this one and have around 14k hours on it
only thing done to it was replace the
exhaust manifold. They have also had it
since new so they kept up with everything
maintenance wise.

Don't confuse this transmission with anything Case built pre merger.[/quote]<< This. These tractors were probably the most bulletproof at the time & are still highly regarded. If you need testimonials about how many hours are expected out of them, go on the IH website redpowerforum. Lots of good info & guys that worked with them.

It frustrates me as well when people refer to an IH or after the merger as simply a case machine. Not so, after the merger there wasn t much of anything Case design left once Magnums came out. Combines, tillage, seeding & tractors was mostly IH & Steiger heritage other than some David Brown stuff

The engine is a CDC Cummins,
which is a Case/Cummins design
they both worked together to
develope. Made by Cummins, but
with case design specs. Very
good engines. I've never had a
chance to drive one, but heard
they are very fuel efficient
and great pullers.

They are very good tractors, and generally those transmissions are pretty bullet proof.
I had a FWA 7140 with around 12,000 hours on it when I sold it and never had any major issues with it while I owned it. Bad paint is normal if it?s stood outside or been pressure washed a lot. I ended up re painting mine to make it look better. 4 speed reverse is better. Earlier tractors had 2 speed reverse. Drive it and check every gear is there. It?ll shift hard between two gears, but that?s normal. I can?t remember which two it is now?.10th and 11th maybe. The shift accumulators are by the cab steps. I used to take mine off and take them to Case and get them re charged every couple of years. They are easy to spin off and I think need about 130 - 140 psi of nitrogen in them. They have tire type valves so take a tire pressure gauge when you look at it and check them.
It?ll probably rattle pretty bad at the back end when it?s standing idling. Don?t worry too much about that, they all seem to do it. It?s the PTO gears I think.
I?d say 30k is ok with 7000hrs (not sure what the scraper is worth). If it?s rough looking you might want to factor in paint etc. The panels are mostly fiberglass and plastic, and kinda pricey from the dealer if they are cracked or broken. Obviously check tire condition. It?s probably got 42?s on the back.

In rice fields it was probably operated by hired labor. Scraper duty would involve a lot of shifting under heavy drawbar loads. I would be cautious.

The hard shifts are between 6th gear and 7th gear and 12th and 13th gear. The reason being that between those 2 shifts mentioned above is both a gear shift as well as a range shift.

How much does it cost to rebuild the transmission on these tractors? I will be using it for moldboard plowing and root plowing. Really no PTO work unless it's absolutely necessary. The guy said the pump on the tractor hasn't been messed with.
