Non-aggressive nest of ground insects?

I was moving stuff around in the shed when I disturbed a stack of blocking next to the wall. Stirred up a nest of something because the angriest buzzing I've ever heard started coming out from under the stack.

Figuring yellow jackets or "ground bees" I beat feet, but they never attacked. Just made the angriest racket of buzzing you'd ever want to hear.

Any ideas what they might be? How to get rid of them?

I suspect some more aggravating and you will see what it is. Try looking for an entry by watching for them to fly in and out. Sprinkle 7 dust in the hole and around.

Stack of blocking? Wood blocks?
Maybe those big wood boring bumble
bees. They make a racket when you
disturb the wood they live in.

Cicada killer wasps are huge and look intimidating, but are not at all aggressive.

(quoted from post at 07:09:13 07/05/19) Had bumble bees do the same thing. They
can build a nest in some pretty strange
places.

We used to have bumble bees in the twine pile beside the hay stack. Every day when I dropped some new twine on the twine pile the pile would buzz.
