Hi, I'm working on a 1946? Ferguson tractor. There is a brass plate on the steering column that has TE36255 printed on it. I'm trying to get a starter for it, and don't have the slightest idea which tractor I've got. Please help.me figure this out. thanks...

The TE is the model and the rest is the serial number so it would be a TE-20 and that tractor was first built in 46 with the first TO-20 being in 48 acording to serial number list on left side of this site.

Wow, that's great. Do you know if there are any starters, other than the original Lucas type, that will work?
Thx agn...

Okay, thanks very much...

Just to add to this, TE is Tractor England, TO is Tractor Overseas. TE tractors had the Standard Motor Company engine whereas Tractor Overseas might have a Continental engine which may have a different starter.

Interesting. The mfg plate does say std mtr co. The other starters I've seen look the same, apart from the positive terminal location, but I'm just unable to determine interchangeability. There is a significant difference between them cost wise.
Thx

According to the Haynes "Ferguson Tractor Enthusiasts Manual"your tractor is probably a late 1953 model. It shows 310780 to 367998 as the
serial numbers for British production in 1953. I would have assumed your model prefix would be TEA rather than TE. The Lucas starter should
be easy to source. These tractors were exported by the thousand from England all over the Commonwealth block of countries but not to the USA
as US production came from the Detroit plant where Continental engines with Delco electrical systems were used. Fawcett Tractor at St Marys
Ontario probably has a dozen units on the lot right now.

There is a member down on the "Ferguson" board (not Massey Ferguson), John Deere D is his handle, very knowledgeable on the TE series Fergusons.

There are a couple different starter designs for those, difference in the drive gear, they are not interchangeable.

Take a look at this...
TE TEA Starter

I started this thread, but it seems to be slipping through my fingers...
Someone named John Deere d sent me pictures of a Lucas starter which seems to be exactly like the one I'm working on.
I think if I could get the parts I need this one can be rescued. This starter is on a TE20.
I really appreciate all the info that has been offered, and if I can find the parts we can get this old thing back to work we really need done.
Thanks everybody, and we're anxious to hear what ever ideas anybody can offer
Thanks again...
