Wet weekend in the kingdom

Had a few dry days so I thought I might be able to cut the last of my oats, but that didn't work out so good. Didn't seem bad when I walked out there, but as you can see it was not good.

So then I decided fix the spindle on the plow. It broke this spring and I just welded the piece back on, that lasted for spring but broke earlier this fall again. So I bought a used hub and spindle at the salvage yard and welded it on. First I cut off the old.

Then I v'd the new spindle so I got a good weld.

I welded it with 7018.

Then I added a couple gussets, got a little carried away with them, but they didn't look that big til I was done.

Fit just fine once it was Cool.

Tried plowing but it was too wet. So I worked on one of the ditches. I've been working on it all along, getting it to drain more each time. It finally got so I could get at it with the tractor to dig it down.

Only got the old DC stuck once. Lol. Should drain good now. When it dries out I'll fix it up some more and level off the piles.

That done left only one thing left to work on, tearing down the old fence around the cattle yard. That has got to be about the worst job there is.

Rolling up old wire is the worst of the worst job. Got done with all but one short side. At least it's not covered in brush.

Took a couple pics of the neighbor chopping corn. He had 2 front assist JD tractors on the chopper. The bigger one is a 7410, not sure what the other is. He's been fighting that field all weekend.

He got that planted late and it froze before it got ripe. Now he has to get it off before it gets too dry. Supposed to get 2" of rain again tomorrow.

Well that's it for this weekend. If we don't get the two inches and it dries some I may try to cut that oats next weekend, otherwise I'll get the combine switched over to corn and start on that.

Santa Claus should bring you a mini excavator to go with that acreage!

When Dad sold the cows, he took out fences all over the farm. He made a little contraption which fastened to the side of the JD 50, and ran off the belt pulley. He would weld spokes onto old auto rims, and these would mount on his contraption. Then when he got wire loose, he'd wind it up on these old rims. When one rim was full, he'd make up another one. But never one to throw anything away, they were thrown into the old hog building. I imagine they're still there!

I logged a couple hours fixing the parking brake pawl on the DB. Now I know why the Limeys don?t build submarines.

6 bottom plow gets pretty heavy on a single rear wheel. What size tractor you got on that? You are likely a lot sandier soil up there, I just got a bigger tractor and bought an onland 6 bottom plow, hope it pulls it.

We had nice weather for harvesting small gains, only good 2 weeks of the whole miserable year.

Ground would work here for me in southern MN, but the beans won?t dry down. 17.5%, can?t make that work.

Found a load of corn at 19.2% today, some a tad wetter, that works a little better. But the sprinkles just started.....

Oops - does look a tad squishy. Sheesh - more rain probably coming at you... and at us tonight/tomorrow. This year has been like "the rain that never ends".

Farmers in the southern part of the state were combining beans like gangbusters here at the end of last week. Friday evening, I went over to Fairmont for a supper out and a meeting with a group of people. When we were driving home around 9:30 or 10pm, some were still combining. Maybe the strong wind that night, kept the beans from getting tough... OR maybe farmers where just getting out, whatever they could get out!

Some crafter would probably buy that rusty barbed wire. I've seen people make wreaths or shape crosses out of it... then add some silk flowers/greenery. They look pretty cool.

That's a 1030, 100hp and that plow is too much for it as my ground is heavy clay. I just bought it for shows which are mostly where the ground is lighter. I'm looking for a chisel plow, then I won't use it much anymore.

Man, I was pulling a 4-18 plow with a 145hp tractor, could stand up the front end in a bad year. We have tough dirt down here near the Bend of the mInnesota River.

I?m hoping my new to me front wheel assist 210hp tractor works nice with the 6-16.

Coulter chisel plows are nice, old Glencoe works well for me on most of my ground.

Hi Jon, as a fellow central Minnesotan, I can?t believe the rain we?ve had! Corn?s chopped for silage, can?t believe we got that done, really tough when your working a job plus trying to make the homefront work. Rain today is ridiculous, standing water everywhere, good luck to you on gettin? those oats out, if we could just get a couple of weeks with no rain.
