My mower was sending me a message

I was mowing today in very thick green bottom land grass. One of the few places in my area with green grass. Every thing else is dried up. I was noticing the grass was not cutting very good. I would double back and take another cut in some areas. The problem was the belts were slipping on the extra heavy spots. It wasn't until I started seeing smoke, as my belts were being ruined, did I realize the problem. Twenty minutes later I was on my way with a new set of belts. I should have checked the belt tension, after an hour or so. I knew better also. The same thing happened last year on that same field. How quick we forget sometimes. No excuse sir. Stan

You migbt want to replace the tension spring. Have also found that you want for- real OEM belts. A lot of OEM belts are 1/2 sizes. Drove me crazy a couple of months ago. Trouble is that they cost more but are made with Kevlar. BIG difference.

IIRC Wheel Horse used a different angle on the belt. Wasn't really noticeable except the belts would wear fast. OEM belts lasted longer. Found that out years ago when I was mowing with a C120 with a 42 " rear discharge deck. Was going through a belt a year. Stopped into see a friend who has a outdoor power equipment shop. Was complaining about the belt situation. He sent me to the local TORO/Wheel Horse dealer. I mower with the same belt for another 3 years till I graduated to a bigger tractor.

On a loy of mowers....absolutely. Try putting new belts on a 610 JD mower with the varispeed setup. No way charlie. Can never get it adjusted. Half size belts.

Easy mistake to make. And you'd think you would learn after having to buy new belts. Years ago I burned up a $200 belt on a Woods 6' mower. Heavy grass sucks up ALOT of horsepower, enough to break the shear pin which I did this summer in heavy grass on a Woods RM990 w/ 67 horsepower behind it.

Not sure if you mean a riding mower, or tractor with a mower. I have a Kubota b8200 with 60" deck. For years I was going through deck belts. Oem from dealer and aftermarket. Worked on the pulleys and tensioner alignment. Nothing. General concensus by those I spoke too said the belt were too loose, slipping and getting too hot. Then breaking. Making it tighter made it worse. I posted here and got many good replies. One was backing off on the tension, and Jeffcat suggested using a kevlar belt. I bought a kevlar belt from the local Napa auto parts. It is called a "blade runner" and is made with kevlar. Since taking off the tension, and using this belt I have had no issues. Just what worked for me.
