California Big Rigs

I am curious why more California trucks are not being sold out of state. The recent CARB/clean air regs essentially made every truck, 2015 and older, illegal in the state after the first of the year. It would seem to me that there would be a fairly steady supply of cheap or reasonable trucks leaving CA (Crazy America) for other parts of the country.

Most likely the companies are going to get every last bit of use of the old ones right up to the 1st.

Probably when they can't be licensed. If they are caught going through a truck stop leaving the state the fine will be more than the truck is worth? Just a guess. I will make someone a good deal on a 69 Volvo FE7 Diesel With low miles. Stan

Aren't they grandfathered in, generally when motor vehicle emissions regulations are updated they apply to new vehicles. I could see them saying you can't bring in an older vehicle to the state or register one previously not registered in the state but I don't think they would make you take yours off the road.

Many owners who don't want to purchase a new motor, just stopped using them. Do a search on CARB regulations in California, and you will just hope your state doesn't start this. Stan

Sooner or later someone will sue CA for interfering with Interstate commerce. There is a thing called the US Constitution.

Many are being destroyed along with nice tractors that we would love to get. They torch a hole in the engine block at a main bearing journal, cut a hole in the transmission and cut the frames. Kind of a cash for clunkers program. Hard to believe but true. Just when you think they couldn't get any crazier.

Geez, here ya go, ruining a perfectly good rant, with facts. Have you no shame......

Nope. No grandfathering. Replace with a new tractor, replace engine with a new engine, or get rid of it.

Sorry. Yes Virginia there is a boogieman and he yes he will take our trucks away. Sorry, sorry, sorry!

(quoted from post at 18:06:33 11/30/19) Tell me this.

Who is going to want a 16 year old truck when you need it to go over 100,000 miles a year on the open road.

John, the trucks from the late 90's and first half of the 2000's are highly sought after up here in Western Canada, especially if they are well maintained or reconditioned. The newer, highly emission controlled engines have a difficult time dealing with the frigid winter temperatures up here without coding out and derating/shutting down. They also have issues with longevity (from personal experience, I have very little good to say about a Detroit DD16).

A friend and I ran the same run for 16 months, pulling super B tankers (gross weight nearly 140,000 lbs) of caustic soda and hydrochloric acid to a plant in northern Alberta. I had a 2015 Western Star with a 600 hp Detroit DD16, and he had (still has) a 2007 Peterbilt with a stock 550 Cat. I could barely keep pace with him, especially in the hills, and he had by far the best up-time in the whole fleet by not having to deal with stupid little emissions issues. In hindsight, I should have yanked that DD16 out of my truck when it blew up the second time, and stuffed a C15 Cat under the hood. Oh well, I'm better off now that I left trucking anyway.

CARB is killing Kalifornia. At the rate of acceleration of passage of economy-killing regulations it almost looks intentional, as in suicide of a state. This in just one more reason the border wall needs to turn north at the CA-AZ border.

its one thing if the feds put down a regulation, but its entirely different if a state does, thats why we have states rights. If CA so chooses, based on elected officials to implement standards that they so choose, then who cares? Thats why we dont have passports to travel between states.

The possible solution will be only certain trucking companies can come into the state, which will result in those few making quite a bit of money i would think, which they would need to offset the cost of the standards.

Cant have it both ways, either want the feds to dictate or want states rights....in a simplistic view that is.

If truckers would refuse to go to California in large enough numbers, they would take notice, but as long as truckers continue to kowtow to their ever-increasing demands, they're just going to keep pushing things.

The problem is FOMO, fear of missing out. Someone else is going to get that load, can't let that happen. Just like farmers. Someone else is going to milk that cow, can't let that happen. Someone else is going to farm that land, can't let that happen.
