Tire and Rim Question

Anyone know anything about this rim? Not familiar with this type. Not sure if the ring is supposed to come loose or not? TIA! Trying to upload pic.

Hard to tell from pic, but there is a ring about 2" wide around the middle of rim. I ll upload a correct rim to see if it shows any better.

That rim was used on ford and Chevrolet trucks in the 50,s and 60,s. I worked on quite a few of them in the late 70,s as a tire man at a cenex station. Good luck finding anybody that will deal with them anymore. They came in 17,18 and 20 inch.

The tire was flat or run flat and the rim sections of the rim came apart/unsnapped.

That rim style was not the best idea ever!

GOOGLE "Widow maker rim" or "widow maker wheel" to learn more about them.

Looks like a split rim that had the snap
ring break. Can't see the snap ring in
the pictures. It might be completely
missing & the cause of the problem. If
not installed correctly, they'd kill you
in a heartbeat. One of the items OHSA
got banned early in it's existence.

That MITE be because there ISN'T a separate snap ring, just the two rim sections with this style of rim.

Then this is indeed the one bad spit design that should be thrown away.

They come apart like an Oreo cookie, in the middle, not a ring out on the edge.

You can?t see when it?s right or wrong putting it together, and the seam is in the middle, not out on an edge where the tire puts more locking pressure on it.

So, best is to replace those. They are the split -rim- style that is dangerous to work on.

Lot of military applications use the same size regular rim and tire in a safe split ring style, or you can easily go to tubeless with radial tires they are very common now
these days.

That's one good thing they did. I seen one come off inside the tire cage one time, sounded like a bomb, the guy putting in air into it, was covered with dirt and dust!

The best thing to do with that rim is to throw it in the scrap iron pile. Those are killer rims once they are driven flat and come apart like that one did, worked in a tire shop for 18 years, have seen the results of what happens when one blows apart.

Yup one of the old split rim wheels. I've used them and worked on them. Never gave it much thought just put them together and aired them up.
Never had a problem with them or any other ringed rim. Maybe lucky don't know. I do prefer the ring type over them. Now days probably getting pretty rusty at the points needed for holding together. We have all types of wheels and rims here so use what we have. I've been putting those old wheels /rims together for over 50 years now. Not saying they can't have some chance of danger to them. Due to the fact tubed tires are hard to find for wagons and such I have had to move to tubeless tires and wheels/rims. Not sold on them either. Problem is the tubes are so poor quality they don't last and the tires are also. I find a lot of tires after a few years are leaking through the side walls. Spray a strong mix of dish soap on the side wall of a go soft tire and that is probably your leak. I find what looks like shaving cream foam on them.
