diesel fuel after setting almost a year

not a tractor. TORO commercial 11' cut , Kubota 53 HP diesel. problem last spring, It sat for over a year. I had just bought previous fall and it seemed to run strong. when home i found a lot of sloppy jury rigged wiring bypassing safety items-seats parking brake. , fixed a minor electric problem, started right away and ran it around the house. parked it 2 days later, would not start yesterday, I sort of got it running but could not keep it running. Suspect water in separator or problem with fuel - sat with about a 1/3 of a tank. I am not knowledgeable about diesels, Found manual info and found the separator. have not drained it yet. what should i be looking for?

Drain tank then let fuel set to separate fuel and water. The old fuel is fine just need to get any water out of it and the tank. Change fuel filters and will probably fine. Those Kubota's need to have all the air out of the system or they will run goofy. My welder has a 3 cylinder Kubota . When I changed the filter i had some trouble with not having all the air out of the system. Would not run right till I got it out.

I agree. Drain the tank. Change the filters and you will be ok. Put in some clean fuel and let it run. It may smoke a little but should clear up. I have started generators with fuel older than that.

could also be air intrusion.i have had multiple diesels start ok after long periods of sitting, then gradually run worse and stall with no throttle response.if I were you,i would make sure battery is FULLY charged, crank the engine with injector lines cracked,(one at a time, until steady fuel comes out)if it is air intrusion,it should run a lot better for a short period of time.the solution for that,is replace all rubber fuel lines, and test/replace electric fuel pump.like what has already been suggested, change fuel filters first because sometimes it seems more complicated but is only filter(s).the diesel fuel should not need drained unless there's a bunch of junk in the tank.
