JD 2510 PTO

I recently acquired a 1966 John Deere 2510. The PTO starts and stops with the lever as expected. Today I put a 7 foot brush cutter on it. When I pulled the lever to disengage the PTO it was free spinning for quite some time before it stopped. Is this normal with the momentum of the blade, or should the tractor stop it. I’ve seen some talk about a PTO brake issue, but those seem to have an issue where they keep spinning all the time, mine does not do that., it stops when not attached to the mower. Thoughts?

The PTO brake can't be expected to stop the rotating mass of a rotary cutter instantly, nor you would want it to.

A rotary cutter has to be one of the hardest things on a PTO brake. A 2510's PTO brake doesn't have much "lining" available to take on the task.

Some have built-in overrunning clutches which save that abuse to the PTO brake.

If the shaft isn't spinning when not engaged it's good. Don't try stopping the rotary mower with the brake, if you want it to stop disengage the pto lever and pull it into uncut material.

There are three positions on your pto lever. Engaged, disengaged and if you pull the lever back further you have brake. I am asuming you have a syncro range trans and not a powershift. Do not use the brake to stop your mower. Coasting when stopping a mower or forage blower or many other implements is normal. Tom

Thanks. I didn’t know about pulling the lever back to brake the PTO. I’ll let it coast.

disengaging the pto and applying the brake with a large inertia load will wear it to bits .
engine at idle speed before disengaging PTO.
