One last shot as I found a few more of the weeds in the next pasture. I did look through the K-State weed ID website and couldn't ID it. Just a last try. It appears they do produce a few pods out of the tops.

It looks very Legume based in leaves and stem. See Zig Zag Clover. Pea family especially if the pods you mentioned have seeds lined up in a row

I think it is Baptisia. Also known as false indigo. Native to eastern and southern North America. It is a legume.
