Non-Detergent Oil Yet Again

I figure to beat this subject to death with yet another discussion. Here goes. I have a Cub Cadet with a Kohler KT117 twin in it. When I bought it I was told to only use non-detergent oil in it. The guy I bought if from always used non-detergent oil in it. As stated in earlier posts, non-detergent is getting hard to find. My question is this: Can I gradually start mixing a little detergent oil in with the non-detergent when I change the oil and work up to full detergent oil over time? This engine does not have an oil filter so it is an early KT117. Also, this is a pulling garden tractor and does not get used to mow so use is limited.

Agreed.

Can't have much (if any) sludge in it, even without oil filter considering only pulling use.

Also agree. if you are nervous, rins through with an open drain with a quart of diesel, then a pint of the non detergent, then let drain for 10 minutes, fill with a 40 or 50 wt racing oil and go win trophies. Jim

Some of those kohler twins did not have pressure oil to the rods. Wonder if that is the model ? They were known to not hold up well.

If this is just a puller, use 20-50 valvoline off road full synthetic racing oil. It's non detergent with high zinc and super slippery, you will feel the difference in the seat. Forget about rinsing with any diesel fuel, just drain it hot. If you want to give it a little more boost, add an ounce or two of JB metal conditioner to the engine oil and the trans. fluid. Have fun!!

Hello Oregon Tractor Jack,

OEM OIL as I recall is 10W30. Just do the change. Unless you are in a hot tropical climate, then use 10W40,

Guido.

FYI, I do not run non detergent oil in anything. I have seen non detergent oil in most dollar stores. I still run Type F atf in the hydrostatic drive mowers, and both will be on the store shelves.

It may not be as difficult to find as you think. Go to someplace like tractor supply and see if you can find an air compressor oil with the right viscosity you need. All it is is a non-detergent oil.
