Header cart put to work and finished the oats.

Well, Friday the header cart that I built went on it's maiden trip. It worked just
as planned, and the 20' header fit perfectly, and solid in its saddles. The cousin
finished all 229A of oats Friday. Storage bins are full and sent 3 trailer loads to
the feed mill. They were paying $160/ton. Price was $10/Ton less if they had to be
cleaned, but the mill manager looked at the loads and said they were real clean, so
they paid the premium price.

One of my younger cousins has a CAD system to make vinyl decals so we designed decals for it also.

I raised 30 acres of oats this year. Thought I could get rich by selling them out of the field for 3.50/bushel. Advertised on cl but never got one call. Ended up selling them to a feed mill for just about the same price as you. $2.56/bushel if I did my math right. Yield about 85/acre. So with 25 bales acre straw which I sell for $7/bale It sure beats raising $2.80 corn.

Fortunately there is a good retail market for oats here. The cousins bag and sell them by the bag. Sell a lot of them for seed in the spring also.Straw bales have been selling well here, also. They have loaded out 2 tractor trailer loads so far and more will be loaded out this coming week.-----------Loren

$160 a ton is the same as I got here in E SD...$2.56 a bushel. Last year I got $2.89 a bushel at harvest time. Moisture was good as you straight combined them?? Usually have to swath here. Nice header trailer! Made mine from a Case running gear.

Think the elevator offers $1.50 or so a bu.

Then as has been so typical of late, way too wet again for oats, test weight was only 29# so would be a discount.

Straw pays better than the grain here, I got 80 cents a bale for the straw.

I am guessing the little dinky header is because of the terrain and the roads. Around here that would have a 30+ foot head on it. Probably an 8 row cornhead or more maybe.
