Westfield auger

I'm going to be working on a 13 x 61 foot Westfield auger . Custom made for this grain set-up . Problem is it keeps talking out the bearing behind the sprocket . I put one in it two years ago it's now out and ruined the shaft . Customer said there are two in the neighborhood with the same problem . Is there any kind of bearings that are stronger ? Or take the side load better ? If like to try and fix this for these guys .

I think you want what's called a banded ball thrust bearing. But I don't know if they come with a special flange or a standard flange that will bolt right up. Do you have a trusted bearing supply house near you? Here in So. Mn. we have Mankato bearing and supply. These guys really know their stuff.

Sounds good in theory, but it wouldn't work because of the side load from the chain drive.

To the O.P., I've seen augurs that used a greatly oversized pillow block bearing at the "head", with a special sleeve made to adapt the large bearing to the shaft size.

I would look into figuring out if that could be done one the units you are working with.

Why not call Wakefield and get their take on the problem they will have a good answer because they want the problem fixed

Can you get a thrust bearging for the steering sector for a M, for example from Mankato, usually the phone gets pretty quiet when i ask for one ?

It didn't sound like they got much from the company . One farmer sold his 70' from lack of help . I'm hoping to get it apart to the bearing and see what I'm dealing with . Might check into the place in Mankato .

Sounds like a few things. Bearing to small and a lack of grease along with loose worn chain. The looser chain will tend to try and wrap as it turns and with it dry will tend to rust when idle off season and the bearing not being greased on a regular schedule. Also if the auger sets out in off season like most do water could be getting in through the seal causing it to rust the inside of the bearing components (balls and races). We used to have that problem with our dryer at one time as the seal would rust out then let the bearing go out.

Hi,
I will assume this is not a swing auger. Is the bearing you are referring to up at the top gearbox, I believe it is a 4 bolt pillow block or flangette
bearing. There should not be any side pressure on that bearing. Where are you located. It could be the way it was set-up.We sale a lot these Westfield augers and have never had that issue.

Google: Mankato Bearing and Supply.
I was in there today. Needed a bearing for the jackshaft on my 800 swather. He didn't look anything up. Measured od and id. Went down an aisle. Thirty seconds later comes back with the correct bearing in hand. $14.50
