I've located the rectangular boss to the rear of the oil filter and just under the head.
Scraped the paint off and no serial number.
Where else should I look?

It would help if you would share the make and model you are looking at. We don't what you are looking at, serial numbers are different place on different tractors.

8N with a side mount dist., vertical grille, and a cast "8N-B" (vertical) toward the rear of the engine.

If I remember right the left side of the engine about middle just under the head is a flat spot where the numbers will be stamped. It will start with 8N?????. Being a side mount that makes it a late 1950 to 1952. In April or May of 1950 they switch from the front mount to the side mount. I have a 1950 8N with a dearborn 19-71 loader and a scout backhoe

Here's a couple of pictures of where it is located. The numbers a kinda hard to read, I've cleaned it off with a wire wheel on a drill. The oil filter housing and starter are removed from mine. This one is a 1951 side mount distributor. Hope this helps!
