hydraulic hose protection?

I have been gifted a 1973 Case 489 B Ck, The flex hoses are ROTTEN, The Florida sun has ruined the outer jacket then the wire rusted and the hose blew up. I am replacing all of these. Is there any coating or covering that would preserve the new hoses? I have already replaced power steering hoses, and in process of the bucket and back hoe lines.
Next question: the steel lines are rusty. Some one suggested replacing the steel lines with flexible hose all the way. That didn't sound correct to me.
This my first tractor and first diesel machine. Learning as I go Been told I'm too old to do this LOL!

you dont need anything on new hoses. and yes steel can be replaced with rubber hoses. is that unit in running working order?

Finally three weeks ago after starter rebuild it fired off with birds nest flying from radiator shroud, wasps flying at me, every thing leaking, And finally smoothing out and running.
Yes it is a project.

I came to the conclusion hydraulic hose life is about 50 years before blow out. I replaced blown out hoses on my CASE 580CK in about a two year period. Of course they need to be replaced before the blow out. The theory they are good until the day they blow is not good logic.

I'm replacing them all before I go too far. So far all 8 for the steering system from steering motor to cylinders. and the 4 to raise the front bucket. They were the first to blow. The large return from bucket control spool is too long and the steel section was worn through. The whole tractor has been rigged with either too short or too long hoses. The front bucket roll hoses are due soon as the outer jacket is cracked severely.

The manufacturers design hoses to last 10 years in normal service.

As far as the rusty steel lines. Simple surface rust is not an issue. Any major pitting or wear gouges, can be an issue.

I'm not a Case guy but I'd check to see if the manual provides the correct lengths for each hose.

You can cover the hoses with a nylon sheath. It resembles fire hose and is sized to the hose you're using. It's best to wrinkle it up on the outside of the hose so that the extra length is pushing outward toward the fittings. Otherwise, it will ride up and expose part of our hose again. You'll have to experiment with a new hose to figure out the correct length for that hose. You should be able to get an extra 5" per foot wrinkled up on the hose.

Ask your hydraulic shop if they can make you steel lines. They aren't much more than a hose. If they can't, look for a better shop. I would replace steel with steel. They're there for a reason and they help cool your hydraulic fluid.

any places that sell or make up new hoses also have access to a product called chaffing gear. It protects the hose from wearing on rough edges as well as keeping the sun off. Really just a very tough canvas like sleeve that slides over the hose.

I'm thinking of cleaning the lines of surface rust and using POR15 to cover the lines then painting over with Case yellow. I guess you would call this a project I'm not sure if it is going to be a total antique show tractor but I do want is close to restored as possible. I repair and don't like to replace as much as possible. Like the steering motor everyone wanted to sell me a new one but it was froze up. So what do I have to loose I took it apart cleaned and soaked it in Marvel mystery oi land couple weeks later it was turning.

I know how sun can wear away more on rubber, although the steel wrap of the hose 'should' be OK. Still, if you wish to protect the hoses from the ravages of the sun, you might wanna try a wrap similar to this.

Local hydraulic/industrial place has sleeve material that very wear resistant, would check around maybe tractor dealers have it.

Since the manufacturers design hoses to last 50 years in normal service, it is highly unlikely that you will need to worry about how long they will last. The jacket that mathies pictured works very well where there could be abrasion.
