Oliver 550 diesel with cracks in the cylinder head.

I am in the process of doing a motor job on my 550 Diesel. When I removed the head I found three small cracks in the cylinder head and a small crack in the block. I have been told that I shouldn't worry about any cracks as most diesel's have been known to run for years with a crack in the block or the head. I'm thinking of just continuing with the motor job and then do a compression test. What is everyone's opinion?

Well Most older Oliver diesel heads do have some cracks, NOW where are the cracks? Now there were 2 550 diesel engines so now I need a tractor serial number. You said something about a compression test? with the head off? Please send me an e-mail and include your phone number. J.

My email is [email protected] I live in Eastern Canada. My Oliver 550 is a 1961. Serial #116 519. The three cracks in the cylinder head are at the smallest point between the cylinders. Before I disassembled the engine I had a compression test that showed 120 to 200 psi on the cylinders. Tim Smith of Smitty's Tractor Parts in Ohio suggested that I not be too concerned with the cracks but go ahead with the engine rebuild and then try a compression test. Also he suggested I could pressurize each cylinder to verify that the cylinder head wasn't leaking.

Here is a picture of my cylinder head with arrows pointing to the hairline cracks. With cracks between the the intake an exhaust valves would it still work?
