Iowa licensing

My former company, which I owned is selling my truck to me, so basically it is transfer and pay taxes. I will be using this for personal and farm use, as such I file a form F. I had the truck listed as 12T, want to go 13T on new licenses. The county assessor is telling me that truck must be licensed as commercial to get tonnage plates.

How do people in Iowa haul for personal use without tonnage plates and not be in violation?

Since you no longer own the company, you are now a 'private citizen'.You are simply buying a used pickup fpr your personal use.however,I am in Colorado so take this with a 'grain of salt'.

No idea about your state but here in NC a regular plate is good for 5000 lbs. Every weighted tag is listed as commercial. A 3/4 ton and up has to be commercial. Farm tags are the exception. Pert near any newer pickup here is overloaded just hauling off the trash with regular plates.

I'm from Iowa. When I bought my F250 two years ago they said the same thing to me. My previous F250 was licensed at 9 tons. I told them I wasn't commercial, but what happens if I get pulled over pulling one of my antique tractors and the DOT weighs me? She said as long as I'm within what's on the sticker on the truck door I'm good.

99 counties will probably give 99 different answers.

Is the 12 Ton or 13T license for a straight truck or for a pickup and trailer? Could the 13 Ton license be kicking you up into the commercial range?

I agree with getting info directly from your state's DMV.

(quoted from post at 12:19:28 11/19/20) Pickup and trailer.

I am an Iowa resident. A few years ago I was doing some occasional commercial hauling so I went up to 12 tons on my 1 ton truck with trailer. In order to do that the status of the truck changed from private to commercial, and the registration fees went UP. When the hauling stopped, I went back to the standard weight, but the commercial status remained. Cannot be changed without re-registering the truck, and of course the higher registration fee still applies.

Based on my experience, I would recommend registering the truck for private, non commercial use. You can still load a tractor on the trailer and go wherever you want to go as long as the total weight does not exceed what the truck is rated for.

A few yrs. back I was pulling a portable fuel tank {on a running gear,no plates }for a fella to my shop with my 3/4 pickup that had my business name on it. Hiway patrol pulled me over told me to park it {the tank} because no plates and being pulled with a business vehicle.
