Drawbar improvement

My old Oliver 550 has what looks like a drawbar attachment from a Ford made over to work on it. Where the front pin for the drawbar hooks under the tractor was a pain to get out, When I got it, there was a long rod stuck thru the pin hole and bent around until it wouldn't come out. If you wanted to remove the drawbar, you had to unbolt the mounting plate to take the pin out. I have it off for the time being and kept looking at it for a better way, Finally decided to weld two tabs on it and stick a long bolt thru it. This part bolts directly under the transmission so not a lot of room to work with it.

The pin goes in from the bottom and this is the top that fastens under the tractor. I always seem to forget a before picture. Chris

I would suggest that you remove the linchpin and replace it with a cotter pin or put a nail in hole and bend it over. The linchpin will disappear in a heartbeat down on the belly of a tractor. I presume the end of the drawbar slided into some sort of pocket on the other side of the bracket and pin goes through both.---------------Loren

Yes, I should have taken a better picture. A cotter in will probably work better. I thought about double nutting it, but then you need 2 wrenches when ever you need to change it.

I have seen where a flat plate with 2 bolts gets bolted up so the pin can’t fall down.
Just drill and tap 2 holes or weld nuts on. Seemed to work well. Can’t remember whose tractor I saw it on but thought it was a good idea at the time.

I like the idea looks fine. The but is I have not had good long term wear with all thread. L would use a hardened solid rod and then weld a cut down bolt for the threads on the end, with a flat or a T, welded on the other end(so it cannot rotate) so you only need one wrench to remove it.

Looks good. Here’s a suggestion- take a file and mark the underside of the pin in line with the hole you put the bolt through, or you could mark it in some other way, then it will be much easier to line up.

I see the wear in the hole for the drawbar pin breaking the bolt. I would just tap the bottom of the plate and use a washer and short bolt to hold it up from the bottom. Or a bar with 2 bolts in a notch in the side if the pin to hold it. The washer deal is easier and not failed on the 806,856,1466 in 40 years so I guess it is fine.

I have old Fords with that original arrangement. Thee is not supposed to be a "long rod bent around" it is supposed to be a special spring pin that pushes in with just little effort and then pops out with quick pry from a screwdriver.

My Ford uses a grooved pin that is secured by a hair pin. It works well. With that setup, the pin is free to turn in the bracket.

My concern with your setup is that the threaded rod prevents the pin from turning; if there's any torque on the pin it's possible the rod will bend, making it impossible to remove without taking off the bracket.
