Hello everyone, I have a 1958 M. Ferguson that does not want to start, it starts for a few seconds and makes a lot of black smoke and then it turns off and does not start anymore, can someone help me to know what I can do? Thank you.

The first thing I would check is the air intake system for an obstruction. Please help the diagnostic process by telling us how long you have owned it,
How long it has been doing this, was it sudden onset, or gradual. what happened just before it acted this way, and what you have tried. Jim

Hi Jim thanks for your comment. Well, I bought it a few weeks ago without knowing anything about this tractor, and I started by cleaning the battery, starter and other cables and managed to start it and drive it for a few minutes, then it turned off by itself, I have managed to turn it on several times but just for a few seconds and turns off again. Thanks again

Check to make sure you have a good fuel flow, change the fuel filters and bleed the lines.

I agree with Jim.I assume that is an oil
bath air cleaner,so the mesh could be all
bunched together causing bad air flow.If
it is black smoke,it wouldn't be fuel
filters as bad fuel filters would cause
white smoke.black smoke usually means
over fueling, which can be caused by not
enough intake.

Air and fuel. Our combine was running then would starve for fuel. Dump sediment bowl and all was fine for a day ,week, maybe the year. Thought it was junk in the tank. Had the fuel pump down by the tank go bad new pump and all is fine now. So could be a plugged filter or sediment bowl. Runs through then starves after it uses the fuel up. Can still smoke black for a very short bit too. I'd check both and change filters.

If it is indeed the intake, easy way to check is to simply disconect it. If engine runs great unhooked, you have found the problem. If nothing changes, something else is your problem.Neighbor had a similiar issue. His tractor ran great. a month later he went to start. It would barely run, blowed black smoke. A bird had built a nest in the intake.

Thanks guys.
I disconnected the air intake and it remains the same, the engine only cranks but does not start and does not smoke from the muffler, after trying for several times started to fume from the muffler and it turned on again and made a lot of black smoke and after about 5-10 seconds it went out again. :(
