How big of an axle

Do you need for a 4020 with 148 loader?

The one you’ve got is fine . Although I’ve never figured how to break the axle that came standard with one

I read somewhere a long time ago that a 1370 Case axle was an easy switch. Probably depends how handy you are.

Been handling large round bales (JD 535 to 569 bales) with front loader for more than 40 years with the 4020 with original equipment front axle and never broken anything. Yes, I have seen some that have had welded/reinforced axles. If you have broken a front axle you have abused the tractor and have probably broken lots of stuff. Just my experience.

The tractor belongs to my uncle and shortly after he got it he put the larger axle under it, he says he didn't need to do it as he just uses it for moving round bales.

I have not seen them break the axle, but have had to remove and have the axle mounting plates welded and or replaced them for a number of guys here, that seems to be the first weak spot to show damage. I agree 100% with counter weighting a loader tractor,, also agree that many beat things to death,, I like to see 1 1/2 times the counter weight of what you are lifting,, for example,, if you handle 1000lb bales add at least 1500lbs to the rear and or 3pt,, so much easier on axle parts when you do not have the rear of the tractor almost off the ground putting most all unit weight on the front end

This is the 4020 mine came off, different axle. PO never mentioned any problem with the axle but the side mounts have been repaired and I found some new cracks while putting it on the Oliver.

I have never broke one but have owned a good many welded up ones. My brother inlaw has broke his several times and does not even have a loader. I have a front end on my 4020 that came from a 3020 that they broke the center casting where the big bolts go that adjust the width.I was going to some day change it but quality of the weld job is just perfect. He must have been one great welder as the weld is a work of art. His business card might say "Can fix anything from the Crack of Dawn to a broken heart". Tom

The tractor in the picture has a 30 series axle. The biggest killer of a front end is overloading, holes, and frozen cow turds.

Is the "dog legs" the up and down part connected to the axle? I broke 3 over a period
of 3 years; I finally put a 4430 wide front on and that solved the problem.

When we used to haul round bales out of the field one at a time I would pick up the bale stick it in fourth gear and on the hills the front end would come up slam back down I’d shift to 7th and head for the stack yard . Sure glad i never found out about breaking front ends until I found yesterday’s tractor 😂
