I got my 2997 Ford Ranger in LOW 4x4 and cannot get it our. I tried backing and restarting engine, still in low 4x4 Help appreciated

That's going to be a tough one to figure out! I doubt anybody has had any experience with that year model. Maybe it will be similar to a 1997 model I bet someone can help with that. Sorry about being a smart azz just couldn't resist.

Mine is a 1999 model and I think i have to put it in neutral then step on the brake then turn the 4x4 switch off. It's crazy.

Is there indicater lights for the functions? Does light for 2 wheel or 4 hi ever light up? If not I would suspect electrical problem.

Electric motor does the shifting. Motor may be bad, or wiring problem, but my guess is its on a bind. If the drive train is on even a small bind the motor does not have enough force to disengage. If you can get it on an icy patch try pulling forward and then in reverse while turning the steering wheel a bit left or right to take out the bind. Happened to me once and it took about an hour of screwing around to get it to shift. Or if its near your shop jack it up with the rear end and one of the fronts off the ground, that should free it. Shift motor is about $50 if it is bad, and not hard to change.

Some years ago I had an Expedition and it had a solenoid on the underside which controlled the switching in and out of 4x4 as the switch was operated. The 4x4 mode would stick in either on or off and I learned to keep the mechanism lubricated and to switch in and out of 4x4 occasionally. The initial fix was a can of penetrating spray and a tap with a hammer.

The first time it happened the dealer wanted some huge $$ to replace everything but at the time I was broke and went hunting for another solution which I got from a friend who also had the same issue on his Ford Pick up.

I don't know if this will help or not.

Did you try and put the truck transmission in neutral prior to moving out of 4 low. That is what I have to do with my 2007 F150. Worth a try.

Does it have a manual or automatic transmission? Automatic has to be in neutral to shift transfer case between high and low range. Clutch pedal has to be depressed with manual.

It could be a number of things, but the most common problem is the shift motor located on the back of the t-case. Sometimes you can tap on the motor and it might start working. Keep in mind to be safe as possible since someone will need to be inside the truck with foot on brake or clutch pedal, tuning the switch to 2wd, while someone is underneath tapping on the motor. Also make sure it shifts to the desired position, it might get stuck in 4H or neutral too.

If you need to shift out of 4L in order to drive it somewhere you can remove the shift motor and turn the nub on the t-case. Just make sure the truck cannot roll on you since it might go into neutral.
