Wife's car recalled.

Just got the letter today. Recalled for exploding airbag inflator. Last time I checked for recalls a couple months back, there were no recalls on this vehicle.
So this is something they just blew the whistle on..

That said, how long have we been recalling vehicles, many models from several manufacturers for this TAKATA inflator? Just now they discover these same inflators are defective in this model?

What's worse, they dont have any parts to fix it, will contact us when they do, if we're still alive!

Last week I got the recall letter on my 2013 Chevy truck. Exploding passenger airbag.

I have had the same recall for my '08 Mazda B4000. I have received 2 regular mail items and 3 e-mails starting in early December. Each time I phoned and talked to an actual person (seemingly helpful), with the promise of an e-mail to set up an appointment. Still waiting.

That's the one I got.

But no parts available yet, will let me know.

From what I understand, the airbags go bad from heat exposure and age. They don't deploy with the proper force and can carry plastic pieces parts along with the bag when they do go off.

Haven't heard of any false deployments though. That's what scares me, not sure the ol' ticker could take that!

I've continually been getting recalls on my 2013 Ford Focus and no matter who I call or write to can't make anyone understand that the car was totaled in 2014 and no longer exists.

i got one also for passenger air bag on 2010 challenger. i said no dam way someone is going to start tearing the inside apart. the car is sitting in storage and dont get used , well hardly , has 3800 km. on it. if i sell it the next guy can worry about that air bag. i sit in the drivers seat !lol.

Grandsons honda got a recall for rusted axle shafts. Three days later he stopped for a red light a mile from home. Went to take off and he said it sound like someone shot a 45. This is the result. They didn't powder coat what was in the boot.

There is a time element. The Takata airbags only become dangerous when they reach a certain age, and as I recall it's dependent on ambient humidity. So the OEMs recalled the oldest vehicles first, those vehicles being most urgently in need of replacement inflators.

Tanaka makes airbags and parts for almost every vehicle on the planet, and a LOT of vehicles have had the recalls on the inflators. For those who are going the macho John Wayne route and refusing to get the work done (sort of like refusing to mask up I'd say), maybe read this little article ....

Just got one for my 2013 avalanche-8 yrs old & decided it needs recalled for passenger air bag.

I have a 2011 Silverado and got the call this week. Went down and had it changed. No problem with the OEM. Took about 30 minutes, as you would expect, no charge.

Rustred, I am pretty sure that they don't tear the inside apart. They just open the compartment, unhook the old one pull it out, insert new one and attach it. No tearing apart.

ya well things sound good on paper. had the jeep in a few years ago for this same thing. they got scratches on the dash and the radio quite
working right after that. i said nobody will get in my stuff , no respect for anything. and yes the dash came out on that one also.

Yeah well the time is coming when they won't let you sell the car with a defective airbag. So you're going to have to suck it up and get it done whether you like it or not, eventually.

Barney ..... you're 100% correct. It is a safety hazard and so often, drivers are thinking only of themselves. If something pops, it's a safety issue for the guy on the other side of the road as well.

I would gladly arrange to have the work done, but there are NO parts available.
2012 Silverado.

got the recall on same passenger airbag inflator for my 09 Sierra. Dealer said no parts available. Said we should get a 2nd card telling us that parts were in. My card said parts were in. She said that happens. Dealer had 5 in stock when recall went out. They were all marked sold that day. Those little kids in korea or where ever need more rest so they dont mess up these important parts.
