How to turn 60 acres into 300

If you want to turn 60 acres into 300 all you have to do is start by not getting any fall tillage done because of mud. That way you can start with that in the spring. Started the year by discing corn stalks then chiseling them. The ground was so hard this year after years of wet weather and poor tillage that I couldn't pull the chisel more than 4 deep the first time over. 7 shanks would stop the tractor dead. So that meant twice over with the chisel plow to get the ground broke up a bit.

Then a trip with the heavy disc, adding several extra passes in all the places with ruts left from years past. Some from more than 3 years back from previous renters.

Then add a trip with the finish disc or cultivator depending on what's needed. Of course adding a trip or two where there are ruts.

Forgot about some plowing sod too.

Then the planting of course. Some oats first, that is up nice now.

Then corn.

The first corn planted has sprouted but I'd not up yet. Finished planting yesterday. The ground is real dry now but some of the ruts left years ago by the big combine still had water in them and were a mess to deal with. Tried to force rain by washing my truck. Lol.

Then Sunday afternoon I finally got my case manure spreader. A neighbor had it and said he would trade it to me for an operational one of most any brand. So I got this Minnesota that needed new wood and fixed it up for him.

He was happy with it so he brought my case over Sunday afternoon.

Randell thought we should try it so we cleaned the hog pen and spread a load.

Works real good too.

This week I will have to spray the corn ground and spread some fertilizer on the oats but that's about it for now. Hay should be starting in a few weeks. Hope we get some rain so I get some.

On the hard ground, Corn does seem to make it lumpy, hard to deal with, got raise more beans on it, that will mellow it out !!

Most of my ground is clay so three or four trips across ahead of the planter is just another day at the office.

Those Grandsons are going to have the farming fever for sure, which is a good thing. Hope you get rain.

South part of the state in our clay, you either do the heavy tillage in fall or you just run a disk and a field cultivator in spraying and call it good. Chiseling in spring typically makes hard bricks you cant get worked down. Dad used to do a lot of spring plowing but that was way back in the day, and his yields showed it, lot of lumps.

Looks like Jon got things to work in his soil up there, good job.

2 years ago it was so wet in fall, and so wet in spring, we all did a lot of hard things to our ground.

It's so dry here in west Michigan, a few days ago my pond was down a few inches, today it is down two feet. Fields are getting dry, and the temperatures are going to be close to 90 by the end of the week. No rain forecast.

Looks like you get the 1st place ribbon award today for making the straightest rows with a 6 bottom plow. Also looks like you could turn 60 acres into 300 with a chainsaw. Have a good one.
