thinking of replacing points with electronic igition..
Noticed the kits that have plugs, wires, etc are for neg ground.

I have a positive ground and all I have seen is just the kit for inside distributer nothing else..

Educate me on this.. do I not need special plug wires, etc for the pos ground kit.. I just need the guts for inside distributer?

thank you

One reason why SOME use special plug wires IS THEY RUN A WIDER PLUG GAP AND AN AFTER MARKET HIGH VOLTAGE CAPABLE COIL which causes higher voltage AND/OR some after market high energy high voltage coils require some degree of ballast/reactance in the plug wires so they use non stock recommended plug wires........

If alllllllll is the same, same plug, same plug gap, same old factory original coil, same fuel, same compression etc etc etc., an elec switch used to conduct then break coil current produces about the same result (at least until points would wear and burn) as the old stock points mechanical switch............

IE YES if you ONLY change to an elec switch versus old points and all else remains the same, NO you don't have to change plug wires but can of course

YES if you use an after market high energy high voltage coil and set the plug gap much wider I WOULD UPGRADE TO THE PLUG WIRES RECOMMENDED.

All an elec switch does is replace mechanical point switching so if no other changes NO you dont need new plug wires and + or - ground doesnt matter either

BE SURE to get a switch matched to your polarity + or -

All you need is the internal distributor part.

Now if your plugs, wires, cap and rotor are bad, it would be a good time to replace them. Also be sure the distributor is in good working order, the centrifugal advance free and working. The shaft bushing don't need to be perfect, but they can't be totally sloppy.

Are you having any particular problem other than failing points and condensers? All this does is replace the points, it will not cure other issues, only give you a reliable, consistent spark.

It does require the correct coil. If you have a 12v system, it needs a 3 ohm coil (true 12v coil) or a 1.5 ohm (6v coil) and a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor. If you have a 6v system, it needs a 1.5 ohm 6v coil.

They try to sell you the high performance coil (which is of no advantage on a tractor engine) just to be sure you get the correct voltage coil, and to try to make a little extra money.

The ignition system IS voltage and polarity sensitive. If you are sure you are staying with positive ground and a generator and whatever voltage you are now running, get the one that matches what you have. But if you are planning on switching to negative ground and a 12v alternator, best make that decision now so you don't have to buy another kit.

If resistor plug wires are worn out enough or if the plug gap is too wide . The spark will jump across the inside of the distributer cap instead of across the plug gap.
