Sprayer Booms

Has anyone on here ever made the right and left side booms hydraulic pickup?? I have some small fields that are a big pain to turn around at the ends
of the field, i've had to put one side up and down (21 foot boom) over 10 times in a field so i wouldn't get the boom in some rose bushes or weeds
that would bend it backwards. I was wondering if a small hydraulic cylinder on both sides would be useful or not, anyone ever tried this??

Possibly dumb suggestion as I don't know the chemical you are using. What about a double width headland at the end then just run up and back and turn on your already stayed headland? Less stop and start and get it done.

I have been involved with the design of electronic control systems for boom folding, for a manufacturer of agricultural sprayers for a number of years. Most of the systems are electro-hydraulic with solenoid valves and rams but sometime we have used Warner Electric Actuators.

It can get very complicated depending on how your booms fold but if you are just lifting the end section vertical to 90 degrees it should not be too bad.

I feel your pain :0), yesterday I sprayed my potatoes for blight with my old, manually folded sprayer and getting on and off the tractor and folding the booms, with doggy knees and a strained hip is not pleasant.

The local equipment mfg here takes a 2x at least a 12 inch hydraulic cylinder and attaches it first to the back board corner on each side then have it where the chain or cable that runs out to hold the boom up attaches to rod end of the cylinders. You need a hydraulic circuit for each cylinder. What they do is put a splitter on there where have a swiched circuit for boom leveling and folding if you happen not to have 4 different tractor remotes.

Years ago I built a 20' retractable boom for my field sprayer. I used square tubing, high pressure hose and T Jet nozzles with a Banjo filter. It worked very well when transporting down the road, or finishing a field alongside a driveway. You're only limited by your imagination!

I have 60 foot booms that fold forward and raise hydraulically. Each side can be folded independently of the other and raised separately too. Mine will swing back with springs to pull it back to alignment after a bush. I do try not to have them catcgh brush or posts. 20 footers would not be much of a problem. Bigger ones will put a lot of strain on the frame holding them if you fold them while driving like that. I do drive up to poles or trees then back up some so the boom will swing forward to clear then drive forward some and swing the boom back out to the pole then go on from there. Mine fold vertically and swing forward to fold up. If yours fold into an X when in transport then you will have more trouble getting them to fold for brush and poles.

Pull those rose bushes out of the trees! I drive in beside the vine then cut the wheels so that my loader bucket grabs the vine as I back up. they either pull off the tree or out of the ground so either way they are gone. I can get a dozen in twenty minutes.
