Massey Harris 444 Transmission Leak at Brake Shaft

In the process of draining and refilling transmission I discovered a significant leak in the double disc brake assembly on the left side of tractor (non-live PTO). No wonder the tractor was about 7 gallons low on fluid - my question is related to the oil seal around the shaft. Is this removable? See pictures.. The parts diagram in the shop manual does not show this section anywhere.

I am going to make a gasket for the one in the pictures but I can't seem to figure out if there is a shaft seal and I don't want to damage it if I can't get a new one.

The seal number is looking right at you in the last two pics, 49034 is the best I can make out it is. But the inside one is in backwards. The numbers need to go to the outside. Best replace both of them.

OK Yes after looking at it more I see that there are two seals however I cannot figure out how to get them out.. does the sliver sleeve in the last pic come out? It is retaining the seals. The otherside is retained by a groove machined into the casing itself.

Your tractor DOES have the MH Live PTO, using the diff clutch on the right side. Tractors without that clutch use drum/shoe brakes, LPTO tractors have disc brakes.

You can use a small curved prybar/large flat screwdriver and tap them out from the opposite side of the part number on the seal. To install you will need a large plate/washer to drive them in that just fits in the housing. So you only push on the outer part of the seal. Then coat the seals with grease/oil when you put the housing back on.

It would be best if you could find a Wholesale bearing supply in your area. Give them the number CR 40034-M1 to cross reference. Second would be a major Auto parts store like NAPA or Oreillys, if they have a counter person with above average knowledge they can get seals by cross reference as well. If the new seal has a spring around the ..rubber.. seal lip smear grease all around the spring. This will keep the shock of the pounding during installation from popping it out of place.
