Massey Ferguson 3165 loader

The front loader on my 3165 has gotten sporadic-
not going up. Transmission dipstick shows full fluid.
I have no idea where to start diagnosis!

Does the loader operate on the belly pump or is there an engine driven pump up front?

Most loaders have a front engine driven pump, not related to the belly pump.

If that is how yours is set up, a common problem is the spline wears off the shaft allowing the pump to stop turning under load.

It would also have a separate oil reservoir. Low oil typically causes the loader to not go all the way up, along with the pump growling.

If the loader runs off the belly pump, there are test procedures in the shop manual. Not an area to go into without clear instructions.

(quoted from post at 21:59:28 12/28/21) It acts like low fluid. Is the reservoir on rihgh side in front oc control levers?

We have no idea of what loader you have, and you haven't said if it uses the belly pump or has a front pump. It would be easier to provide a likely answer to this if we could see it. How about posting a few pictures?

Here are the photos you requested of the front end loader

The domed cap in the first picture is where you fill the reservoir. It should screw out.

There is either a dipstick on it or a small pipe plug screwed into the reservoir below the valve body.

If it has the plug and no dipstick, take the plug out while filling, fill until fluid comes out the plug hole. With all cylinders retracted of course.

Thanks! Does it take quarts or gallons? I would like
to remove the hose that goes back to implements,
because it has a leak- dont know what size plug, or
cap yo use

To check the fluid level there may be a dipstick hanging from that breather or there may be a small plug several inches below the valve mount on one of the reservoir sides.

If you know the fluid in it is red, it may well be ATF. It can use straight hydraulic oil or a universal transmission/hydraulic fluid. How much it takes will depend on how low it is. If you get 5 gallons you should have some to add in the future.

What hose going back to implements? If you plug the wrong hose, you can do a lot of damage. From the bit seen in your pictures you only have a supply hose from the reservoir to the pump (low on the frame) and a pressure hose to the valve from the pump. then hoses from the valve to the loader cylinders.

The hose Iam talking about goes from control box
to a quick connect at back of frame. Hose has a
loop in it going to quick connect, I assume so it can
reach backhoe or something

If the hose has a quick connect on the end of it and it is looped back and connected to another hose or disconnect, you can't just plug it. If your loader valve is set up for power beyond it may be providing a return to sump for oil that would have gone to a hoe. If you have a diverter valve in the system that swaps oil flow from the loader to the hoe, you may be able to discontinue that hose. You need to know how it is plumbed, for anyone to just say plug it, without studying your system, at this point is not prudent in my mind.

Right.

Got a new hose made for only &236.00! Now need
to find out what fluid last owner used, do after I
drain system, I can put compatible fluid in. Draining
old oil, found red and gray oil- fun stuff this old
tractor restoration!!!

Hydraulic 32 oil for Loader frame reservoir and tractor hydraulic oil for transmission/rearend.
