Finish Mowers

On those small 6-8-10 foot pull type finish mowers----What is the best---Rear discharge or side discharge????

Personal choice. I like my woods RM 660 side discharge.
People who cut grass very short and produce large clumps of grass may want rear discharge.

Everyone has their preference how to mow.

Before zero mowers came along we used to sell 60/70 rear finish mowers a year. now might sell 3 or 4. That being said there is no better or worse it is a matter of what do you want. Like in trailer parks or where you do not want to throw things the rear discharge seemed to be favored. MOST rear discharge mowers require you to mow a little more often to make it really look right. A good side discharge throws the clippings father. Hard to bead a Land Pride in either style but Befco,Woods, and many more also make good mowers. Watch and do not buy one of the Chinese imports with a gearbox and spindles that you might never get parts for.

You talking about those Swisher type mowers you pull with a 4wheeler, or a 3 pt hitch type? Either way, Ive found that rear just clumps the clipping, while side spreads them better. YMMV

Mine is a rear discharge. I don't care if it's a rear discharge or side discharge If you're cutting a lot of grass as in tall they're all going to clump. I mow very frequent with my rear discharge so I'm not cutting much grass at any one time and it does not clump.

Some place in have a pic of my Dad on JD A with a woods cornstock chopper a d behind the chopper was a disk.
This was in the 1950s. Cornstock choppers were rear discharge.

I put a 6 ft corn stock chopper on the Farmall C. I make it into a side discharge. BOSS like the side discharge better because she re mows the clippings until the dissapear.

If I have to mow really tall grass, to prevent clumping, I'll adjust the top link so the mower deck is at an angle with the ground. That way the blade cuts the grass high in the front and then chops it into smaller pieces as the grass gets to the rear of the blade.
A side discharge then allows me to cut the clippings a second time.
If I have excessive clippings, I'll make a 12 ft wide windrow and pick them up with a 54 inch lawn sweeper..

And why the big deal about a bit of grass on the yard. You guys all complain about the cost of gas among other things then waste it worrying about a little grass on the stubble. It just works in in a few days if you leave it to dry and works as fertilizer for the yard.
