John Deere Model R Injectors & Valves

Be for you adjust valves, release the decompression lever?? Installing injector nozzle, place a new sealing washer {R463R} on the end of nozzle.. Nozzle out, now is the time to check its fuel cracking pressure, you can adjust..

Ahhhh, Maybe that was it... Needed the decompression lever pulled to rotate the engine... I missed the part saying to release it in the procedure, but that would make sense.

As far as the washer goes, I looked inside the bore the injector slides into with a bore scope and there did not seem to be any copper washer. I even reached in there with a pick and tried to see if it was just stuck and nothing in there was movable so I am not sure there is one in there? I know it shows one in the parts manual, but I did fine other discrepancies between what I have and what is in the manual.

I was unable to check the fuel cracking pressure as I had the pony off the tractor an disassembled at the time so I was unable to rotate the big engine over under compression.

What did I need a torque wrench for? I do not recall seeing torque specs for anything in the related to the injectors. It says to "tighten the nozzle assembly nut securely"

To continue; you did not find a sealing washer; But you need a -new copper sealing washer- R463R- on the end of each nozzle to seal and hold compression.. Think about it; that is why everything inside the valve cover was black goop.. You are getting black unburnt fuel leaking around the nozzles that are not sealed to the head.. What do you think?

That is a possibility.... I guess I was thinking the sludge buildup was from lack of maintenance for 30-50 or so years... Do you think I would notice the compression leak if I cranked the big engine over without the valve cover on?
