3 or single beater??

not really ford tractor related though I own a couple. Went to a machinery auction today wanting to buy a better than i have now manure
spreader. The one that I wanted went for more than I wanted to pay. It was a new idea with 3 beaters they had several with just one beater.
My question is which is better?? I would think that a spreader with 3 beaters would do a finer job than 1.The only spreaders that Ive used
has always had 3 What do you guys think?? Thanks All........

New conventional box spreaders only come with a single beater, and have for decades.

That should tell you something.

The extra beaters likely do not provide enough additional value to make it worth the added expense and complexity.

I have a 3 beater John Deere 44 and for pen pack. I would never trade it for a single beater spreader. It does a perfect spread job with no clumps which is important to me as we notill right into it next spring. Most single beater spreaders are built heavier. I have a single beater 44 for barn yard soup and anything that might have frozen chunks in it. Tom

We've not had more than a single since we had to quit using the old converted hose spreader 50 years ago. Always had a NI spreader and was a single beater. Like said slow down the apron chain speed and run the throttle open more and it will spread fine even for notill. I always spread in 1st high range with the case 830 or the 806 so about 5 MPH. didn't worry about how thick so let the chain run fast and good amount of throttle.

I have a late model Hagendorn spreader , and it has a
upper and lower beater, because if it only had just one
beater, manure would simply go over top. The old 3
beater design had each of the three beaters hitting all
of the manure on the way out the back.

Our NI only has one beater but originally had two, before we got it. Id like to see how a 3 beater would work. I have the apron speed at lowest setting and run at pretty high rpms but clumps still ride over the top. Pen pack mostly. The loose straw spreads more uniform.
