Or very similar. A 1934 Hillman Minx 9.8 hp, 6 Volt electrics, side draft Solex carb, four speed gearbox with freewheel, metal steering wheel which your hands froze to on cold days if you did not wear gloves, (no heater or radio), leather seats and curtains with tassels on the rear windows. 4.00x18 inch wheels with spokes that worked loose and had to be tightened like a bicycle wheel.

Mine was blue and black.
My First Car
 
My first car was an Austin. Even this color. Paid 800 of my hard earned dollars and ran great. Hardest part was getting used to this after driving my parents 4 door Pontiac Catalina. About the same size as the island.

Yes, 9.8 hp, back in the day we had Austin 7 = 7hp, Austin and Morris 10 = 10 hp, not many went over that unless it was a luxury car like the Wolseley or Humber. Ford introduced 8 and 10 hp cars here like the Popular and Prefect as 10 hp and later the Anglia at 8 hp

Cars were taxed on their horsepower ratings between the Wars and so Ford cars like the T and A were taxed at a far higher rate. Our manufactures developed the small and economical engines and sold a lot of cars.
 
I had the Morris version of that, mine was dark green, Morris 1100, economical little car with Hydrolastic suspension. They were fine until the metal worm got into the sub frame and mountings.
 
Image from the web, but the same as my first. Purchased for $25.00 not running from a neighbor who's father passed away two years prior, but hadn't been driven or moved for 8 years. 216 stove bolt with vacuum assisted shifting. I was 14. The whole story is way too long. Jim

Those British HP ratings are really confusing. Calculated, taxable hp, but any relationship to measured HP is coincidental, or it seems so.

Really interesting reading and explains a lot about why engines developed differently in different areas of the world.
 
Nice looking car! here is a pic of my first antique car that came my way from within the family,1947 Plymouth totally original.

As I recall I had a problem removing the wheel lug nuts on one side of an Austin,did not realize at the time they turned opposite.
 
9.8 Horse power HUMMMMMM , sure glad my first car had a wee bit more . Mine was a 1956 Ford Frairlane convertible , sproting a 292 Thunderbird Special that a few days after getting home things changed . A few upgrades went in and on it . Like and Isky 3/4 cam dual Holley birdcage four barrel carbs a mallorey dual point and headman headers . I had it about a year and on a sunny day driving down to my grandparents as i went by the local For Dealer there was a midnight blue 61 sunliner setting in the ft. row and the devil made me turn around and have a look and in less then and hour i was driving out with it that had to be enhanced into a vary fast car .
 
You bring back pleasant memories. My second car was a 1956 Ford Convertible with the T-bird engine. It was exactly like the one in the movie, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World. My first car was a 1956 Ford Club Sedan with a T-bird engine.
 
I still have the first vehicle I bought at age 17. Looks a little different theses days.

I had a 1947 plymouth that i inherited from my father---it ended up being the power plant for our boatyard winch on our marine railway
 
A '61 Rambler I got for $100. Push button auto and the front seat backs folded back to make a bed. They had a trunnion front suspension that was notorious for front wheel tramping and falling out when they broke from fatigue.
 
My first was a 59 Chevy Impala red and white with the fins rusting out and no reverse automatic. $35. who needs reverse when you got friends.
 
Wow, 9.8 horsepower. My lawn mower has more than that :)
My first car was also my dad's first car. The 39 Ford Deluxe. As seen in this photo from 1970. I've still got it.

First was a 1966 IH pickup that I drove till I wrecked it. 241 six cylinder and 4 speed. Then I drove a1970 F 100 that was my dads until my sister was old enough to drive. At that time I bought my first new one a 1982 F 100 with a 300 six and 4 speed overdrive. It spent way more time in 3rd gear than in overdrive. I bought the 82 when I was a senior in high school. 59 Ford Fairlane with salvage title ,if it wasnt should have been ! It was rear ended once ,my dad hammer it back into shape . First time I seen anyone use lead as filler .

My first car was a Morris 1100. It had problems. I replaced the head gasket but the problem was still the same. I think that it ended up being a cracked head or block.
 
My first car was a 65 mustang. Had a 289 4sd. This was my girlfriend when picture taken 49 years ago & now my wife of 47 years, Lisa.

1927 Pontiac that I drove to hi school in 1956 and still have it liscenced and insured and drive very seldom
 

Mine was a '69 Country Squire that I bought for $125 and the seller tried to talk me out of buying. Same color as the one in the photo. I thought I'd bought a race car since I was used to driving a VW bug and with a 390 under the hood a lot more happened when I stepped on the gas. After a series of mechanical mishaps the scrap hauler towed it away. Gerrit

First car: 1956 VW Karmann Ghia.My Dad bought it for me 2 months before my 16th Birthday (legal driving age in Ohio then- 1969) $50. He bought it so I would not ask to drive his car.....NOT this one.

That is a pretty sweet first vehicle. I'm content with my 01 Ram for a first car but man would that have made an impression pulling up to school with.
