Picking corn and bear damage

Picked a few loads of ear corn this weekend
with the picker I just got. Went fairly
well with only a couple issues to work out.
After that it worked good.

I did find a couple spots where the bears had been eating.

No dens this year tho. Just 5 acres left to combine and this year will be all done.

Bears are very scarce around here and is thought if they are here it is part of a migration pattern.

I had 7 acres of specialty corn that was the only corn field in at least a half a mile. It also bordered a wooded river bank. Deer took full advantage of the cover with free food. Looked very similar to your damage except they left a stalk or two here and there.

I had a lot of trouble with the corn picker pulling the stalks out of the ground and dirt with roots causing a jam at the tip of the rollers. The very dry ground had an inch of rain in the middle of my picking the field, so I blamed it on that, but I'm sure there was more to it than that.

Thanks for the pictures.

Had a terrific amount of bear damage last year. I had 85 acres of corn this year with only 2 varieties. legend and Thunder seed . Did mostly Thunder first and very little damage. Just a few small bear circles. [Thats where they sit on their butt and drag any stalk they can reach w/o moving towards them] Got into the legend and it was a different story. Many areas the size of a 2 car garage or more knocked down. This was in a 35A field that was split between the 2 varieties. The legend must have tasted better

Looks like the picker was working well. Is it a Case also?

Picking corn was always my favorite part of harvest. My job was unloading the wagons, but I loved it.
