Hunting scene from the 1920's. My grandfather with friends hunting rabbits using ferrets. Way to keep food on the table in the hard years when ther was little work. He died long before I was born so this picture is about 100 years old.

My cynicism just kicked in, its the hard years and these guys are hunting rabbits to eat. With plump ferrets that also need to eat. What do the ferrets get fed all year long? Rats? Starlings? Sparrows? I am sure firearms dont eat. Any idea how keeping ferrets works?

Not an expert in any way but my father used to keep ferrets and think they ate the bits that we did not. My uncle kept and bred ferrets until his death in the early 2000's and we still have a game keeper who has them in the village today. Again, there are regulations controlling the use of ferrets in hunting as there are using hounds for fox hunting. Not my thing, but I do wonder about all the laws today.

I agree there are costs to all those items. But maybe this was more specifically to put some MEAT on the table when otherwise there might not have been.

Think back to those days people slaughtered their own chickens, ducks, geese, calves etc to eat.Always some heads, guts, etc for Ferrets, cats, dogs, etc.Plus hunting seasons didn't mean much to country people,we used to eat a lot of squirrel, also Possom,Muskrat, ground hog, rabbit, turtle, bull frog legs, catch fish you name it.A Ferret will run a ground hog or a Fox out of a hole easily.A shot gun was the #1 survival item.

Back then hunting was not a sport. It was a way to feed your family.

But look at the conversion rate of food fed to food provided to the table. Im thinking a ferret is much better than a mule used to plow a garden. And you would never even think of eating your mule.

My Grandfather was a market hunter guess in late 1800s, I never knew him. Took orders when he home delivered produce and the boys (my father) filled the orders, mostly ducks from the Erie canal.

MajorMan. I really love the photo and the story behind it. Would love to own one of those time period double barrel shot shotguns in working order. Again-fantastic story. Wingnut
