Ideas for converting to S tine

Well I bought a new to me 16 foot glencoe C shank cultivator
this year. Its replacing my even older glencoe 12 foot 3pt unit.
The frame of my old 3pt is in good shape. Would it be worth
converting it to a S tine type as a soil finish tool? Just tossing
around ideas of what to do with it. Most of the shank holders on
it are very much used up and sloppy. Worst comes to worst I
could just keep it as a backup.

They have bushings for them you can replace and will tighten the shanks up some if the bracket is not worn out. We just weld a washer on the outside to fix the hole if it is worn and use a regular bolt instead of the fancy set up that is on it. Yup the bolt can turn and so can theirs when the hole gets worn some. As for finer finish why not put a spike on the back of the machine to smooth it out . Or just pull a packer behind it. You do have to take the packer on back into consideration when turning. Not a big deal though. It is done all the time around here in the spring .

I converted a 7 foot Ferguson to S tines, it was a lot cheaper than trying to find original springs. I had access to some material and equipment to make brackets. We have a lot of rocks and S tines are much more forgiving.

Most of the spike bars are 5 bar. the coil tine ones just drag trash or don't do anything I found. Had one on a filed cultivator took it off and hung a spike tooth drag back there. It needs longer teeth on it. The ones on it are about worn out. Would like some about 8-12 inches so they calay down pretty flat to let trash slide under them.

Sorry, no pictures, and the cultivator is 1800 miles away. The cheapest and easiest way to do it might be to run 2 pieces of angle or square tubing all the way across the cultivator to attach the S-tines to. I think the standard brackets attach to 2 angle or square tubing. Others might know more about this, it was 25 years ago when I did it.
