barn clean out

Downsizing my mom, the barn has to be cleaned out.
We have a Massy Harris Ferguson 50 and implements.
I don't have an idea of its worth. Always barn kept, well maintained. It is an early model in the transition from MH to MF. Runs great, all the tin is good, has the scalloped hood sides, and the airplane nose ornament. Has remote hydraulic. 3pt hydraulics need to be rebuilt. It was used for moving wagons on a produce farm and mowing until dad retired, but nothing really strenuous. It retired with him, grading the lane and working a garden. I wore out some pants on the seat when I was a young man. Great little tractor.

Has implements I can value, but I don't know if the tractor is worth more than an average utility tractor because of what it is.

Any suggestions on value?

Tractor House, Equipment Facts, and other such tractor sites are good places to start to get the "I know what I have. No lowballers," value for your tractor.

There's an MF 50 on Tractor House right now that looks to be in similar condition to yours going by the pictures. It's a dealer, and they're asking $6900.

Should you expect to get $6900 out of yours? Not even close. MF 50's are hardly "hot" collectible machines right now, if they ever were or will be.

Half that is more realistic.

I would not suggest consigning it to an auction unless you KNOW what kind of auction it is. Avoid auctions with reputations as "junk auctions." You'll get scrap price.

Your tractor appears to have the classic Massey Hassis
curve in the hood sheet metal. This feature
disappeared with the later MF 50 models, and to an
avid tractor collector, this feature makes your tractor
much more rare and collectible. So it should be worth
more to the right buyer. And it appears to be in very
nice condition. Ask well above market value for a MF
50, and let it be known what you have.

Thats a real nice example of a MHF 50. I have different rear rims and probably a few other minor differences. Ive been offered 2900 Canadian for mine. I wasnt trying to
sell it so I still have it. Not sure if this helps you or not.

It looks like it has good tires, new tires are expensive ($1500) so good tires adds a lot of value to older tractors. Your tractor also looks well cared for: nice paint, seat in good condition, etc. Like others have said, it helps to know what you have. Options like power steering, live PTO or continuous running PTO, 3 point hitch (looks like it has that), Multi-Power (on-the-go shift), spin out wheels (you have that), and others all add value. If you have the operator's manual you can compare it to your tractor to see what options you have. Any service records and receipts help tons too.

The straight front axle tells me it could be setup to be a loader tractor, that adds value too, especially if you also have the loader sitting in the barn too. Snow bucket, tire chains, and Heat Houser (winter half cab) are all attractive on a loader tractor. Any popular implements help too: plow, disk, sickle mower (especially pitman-less like MF #41), rotary mower (like a Bush Hog), rear blade, etc.

There is a Massey-Harris & Massey-Ferguson forum below this that is all Massey. The good folks there might be able to interpret your options for you. Send pictures to a local auctioneer or Massey-Ferguson dealer, they should be able to give you a rough price range that it could bring in your local area.

I was kind of surprised - went on Purple Wave and had to go back years to get just a few.

The running tractors have videos of them running. I actually thought a utility tractor of that size was worth more than what those are bringing. Purple Wave has a pretty good bidding list and seldom
is anything ever given away

That is less than 9 or 2 N Fords are advertised for here in Ohio. Even wanting $3,000+ here. Never see one like that for sale.

You have a very nice, original tractor. There are very few in this condition. If it was mine, I would put it on Mecum's Gone Farmin Auction
in November of 2023. That nice of an original tractor would bring a premium price at their auction in Moline,Illinois. They could get it
hauled for you so that would not be a problem. I have done business with them for 12 years, they are very good people to deal with.

Keep in mind those are all prices from 3-6 years ago, and they're so-so to poor condition tractors, and Massey is not a big collector brand.

Just as old does not always equal valuable, and rare does not always equal valuable, utility does not always equal valuable.

"To the right person" sure, but you have to find that right person, and they are far and few between. You also have to realize that the "right person" also tends to know that these tractors aren't in big demand and will not pay a premium price.

The longer you have to market the tractor, and the wider you can advertise it, the more money you'll be able to get. Trying to sell it locally in a short timeframe, you're going to have to take a bit less.
