Swathing/Combining Oats wi Farmall 450 Stage

I'm getting ready to swath my oats. Is the Farmall 450 a good choice on the 9 foot cutter? Also, should I swatch green but hard dough stage? How
long to dry before using the pickup attachment on the John Deere 42 pull type combine? kelly

I swathed grain for many years and we always cut the crop only a week is so before we could have direct cut/combined the crop. If you live in an dry area, and can go for days or weeks without rain you can definitely cut the grain earlier, but in around the Great Lakes weather is very unpredictable and it is often hard to string a week of rain free weather together. Our swaths are heavy and if they get rained on , we sometimes have to turn the swaths to get them dry. Very much depends on your local conditions is what I am saying

IF you are swathing for grain that would probably be about right then let set to dry down for a few days. IF swathing for hay I would do it in the milk stage and let dry down to bale. Once cut you will need to monitor them for when to thrash for grain and same for baling.

What are you cutting with? I cut mine after it's turned. The 450 is a good tractor to use. What kind of swather are you using? Here is a pic of me cutting mine.
