Ford Steering Rod

Has anyone ever dealt with this on 79-81 Ford 340/540s? They changed the design it looks like with the latter models.

The left side rod end can be changed as normal. The right side rod end is integral to that portion of the rod (#35 in the diagram). It doesnt seem that the piece is made aftermarket and it seems like itll run about $400 with shipping.

Has anyone perhaps cut it off and welded a rod end on? Just checking for ideas. Thanks.

I haven't done it on that model but have done it several times on other Fords.
Find a tierod end that fits the hole in the steering arm, cut off the old one and weld the new one on.
Costs about 1/10 of a new one.
I do a bit of grinding, add a bit of bondo and paint and you can't tell it from oem.
I did the ones on this tractor at least a dozen years ago.

I did the steering box to axle rod. Took 2 ends like pictured and welded in new tube. If the bad end tube is hollow just cut off weld new end in.

Welding one on is OK if done realizing it is a single point failure location and not just pasted on. Having the rod end cut off, then threaded for the sleeve like on the other end would be easy to change. Jim

I've bought new ends from trucks or what fit the taper then cut the old end off and put the to together with a good vee ground in them and welded them back so I had a new end on them. I do it to the telescoping ends of tractors all the time. I buy the one for the threaded end for either job.
