Have a 2000 Buick, message on panel says gas cap loose, check gas cap. Cap isn't loose. Message stays on. How can I turn it off?

There are multiple places in the evap system that can leak. The computer doesn't necessarily know where the leak is, but a loose gas cap would be the first thing to check. If it's not the cap, you'll have to dig deeper. Rusted fuel filler neck, defective vent valve, etc..

The sure way to tell is a smoke test. Otherwise, anything is just a guess.
The fuel system on a modern car is a sealed system for the most part. There is a slight pressure differential kept in the fuel tank that is checked by a sensor to verify the integrity of the fuel system. Any leak in the system can trigger a warning light.

Buy a new gas cap, also take some damp paper towels and wad them up above the restrictor for the unleaded fuel nozzle. Then get emery tape 120 or 160 grit and sand down the area the oring in the gas cap seals on. As others said there are many other places the gas vapor system could be leaking but this is the most common problem.

My Dodge will show that message every now and then since it was new, it is far from new any more.

Once the message comes on it will stay on for 2-3 tank fills of fuel before it resets itself.

My cap does seem loose when the message comes on, it must not be a perfect match. It happens more so when we get a cold snap, so temperature and expansion/ compression of the parts must have a bit to do with mine.

Actually it hasnt bothered in the last year or so, now that Im thinking about it.

To turn it off disconnect the neg battery post for one minute then install it . This resets the computer. It may come back on if there is a problem with the cap. Done that lots of times.

Our 2019 Acadia had an check engine light that turned out to be an evaporative emissions code. One of the possible defective parts was the gas cap, but it turned out to be a defective purge valve.

Rub a little Vaseline along the sealing surfaces of the gas cap and go on about your business. It works on my ancient 07 Impala.

I had a 1995 gmc truck that threw an EGR code when it was very cold. I pulled the ECM fuse for a few minutes instead of removing the battery. It worked.

Sometimes the sealing surface of the filler pipe is damaged from pump nozzle. If bad you may need a new fill pipe.

You can "turn it off" by getting a $40 code reader, plugging it into the OBDII port, and resetting the codes.

More than likely the message will come right back on, because you haven't fixed the problem.

Your fuel filler neck is connected to the gas tank by a hose, and there is another vent hose. Your car is almost 24 years old. One or both of those hoses could be cracked or rotten and leaking. There could be a crack in the metal of the filler neck itself or even the gas tank.

The message is telling you that the fuel system is not sealed.

new cap will not fix it. common problem, especially if you drive lot of gravel. something that old; place tape over the light!

Overfilling the gas tank enough to push liquid fuel into the charcoal evaporation control canister can also trigger an error code.

If you overfill your tank, it can cover the vapor intake hole with liquid gas, which can then be sucked into the charcoal canister. This can damage the canister and possibly other parts of the system, which will cause the cars check-engine light to come on
