Bill, I was mowing with the flail mower yesterday and had two fawns run out on different passes in the grass, the little buggers will lay right there when you pass by but with the flail you at least have to be on the same pass as their laying in and they get out ahead of you. I hope I never hit one.

I hit one last year with the drum mower mowing hay. Broke its leg (I figured I had killed it). Neighbor called the game warden and he said it had a broken leg was all. He tried to tell me to start my mowing in the center of the field so I wouldn't hit them. It might work but he showed that he has never mowed a field of hay in his life.

killed a fawn with my mower conditioner, ruined my day, felt so bad for that momma. We have way too many deer here, but that did not make it much easier. Ruined a pheasants nest this year, I hated that, we don't see very many in our area like we used to. One day I'll quit making hay and let the critters have it all.....gobble

Some jurisdictions mandate a boom suspended from the front of the tractor across in front of the mower . With dangling chains .

At least a NH 489 opens up and runs them. Dad had a New Idea it would only pull the fawn half way through and it had to be barred in reverse to get them out. Turkeys just go poof.

Hey Bill if you were running the krone, might not have turned out so well.My Dad was cutting oats one time with a sickle mower and our dog got a little to close to the action...partially clipped off his hind leg.Vet amputated what was left. That three legged dog did pretty good after that.Couple years later the dog was hit by a car and that's all she wrote.Incidentally the dogs name was lucky..

It would be my guess it was laying just right and a knife guard bumped it and made it jump and run. Much better than my encounter with a fawn this morning, got one with the right wing of my batwing mower. I hated that too

Many years ago I ran a coon thru my old Allis 60 combine running beans. Made big KERWHUMP when he hit the cylinder and a big mess for me.
